THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 4, 2009) – The Maritime men's swimming and diving team defeated Lehman, 127-110, Thursday night at the Riesenberg Hall Swimming & Diving Facility, while the Privateer women's squad lost a close meet to the Lightning, 111-96. With the win, the men improve to 3-2 and the Lehman men fall to 1-4. In defeat, the Maritime women fall to 0-5, while the Lightning women improve to 2-4.
The Privateer men recorded eight first place finishes on the night with their first coming iin the first event, the 200 yard medley relay, where freshman Fritz Beyer, sophomore Benjamin Ingersoll and freshmen Leonard Hudson (Freeport, Bahamas/Jack Hayward) and Joseph Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun ) combined to swim a 1:48.80 and capture an early 11 points for Maritime. Freshman Arthur Seaman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) beat his counterpart from the Lightning in the 1000 yard freestyle, finishing 16 seconds in front of Chris Mammano with a time of 11:55.74.
Tucker won the 200 yard freestyle as he was the only swimmer to record a time under two minutes, 1:56.49. In the fourth men's event, sophomore Ryan Luchsinger (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) finished first is the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.54. Classmate Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) swam a 2:16.25 in the 200 yard IM capture the top spot, while Hudson (2:22.11) and sophomore William DeFries (Salem, S.C./D.W.Daniel) (2:24.91) finished second and third in the event. In the men's one meter dive, freshman Christopher Valavanis scored 195.8 points to place first. Beyer won the 100 yard backstroke with the only time under one minute, 58.82, while junior Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) was the only non-freshman or sophomore for the Privateers to win an event, placing first in the 500 yard free with a time of 5:40.55.
Despite four first place finishes, the women could not come up with the win. Sophomore Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) swam a 2:33.08 in the 200 yard IM to claim the top spot, while freshman diver Laura Palino (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) registered 122.35 in the one meter dive to claim nine points for Maritime. Hickey also won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:08.32 and freshman Brisa Carrido rounded out the first place finishes by swimming a 1:25.07 in the 100 yard breaststroke.
The Privateer swimming and diving teams return to the pool on Tuesday, Dec. 8, when they squads play host to Skyline-opponent Old Westbury. First event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Riesenberg Swimming & Diving Facility.
