Martin Clayes 2013 ICS

Martin Clayes

Martin Clayes completed his first season at the helm of the Maritime Men's Soccer program in the Fall of 2013.

In his first season with the program, Clayes guided the squad to an 8-11-2 overall record and a 5-3-1 mark in the Skyline Confernence to finish the regular season 4th in terms of standings, and to a home first-round playoff matchup against Farmingdale.

Clayes came to Maritime from Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., where he led the Blue Jays as head coach for the past three seasons. At Westminster, Clayes quickly turned around the program by tying the school record for wins (11) in 2010 and winning the SLIAC Conference League Title in 2011, going undefeated in conference play (7-0-1). In 2012, the Blue Jays lost in the SLIAC Championship game after finishing tied for second in league play.

Before Westminster, Clayes was the assistant women's soccer coach at Truman State University, his alma mater. In 2008, with Clayes on staff, the Bulldogs were crowned NCAA regional champions and lost in the NCAA quarterfinals to eventual Division II champions, Seattle Pacific.

Clayes graduated with a B.S. in Exercise Science and played four years for Truman's men's soccer team, earning NSCAA All-American honors his senior year. Besides college coaching, Clayes has been involved in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) and Professional Development League (PDL), first as a player/assistant for the St. Louis Lions, and then as an assistant for the Chicago Fire (PDL) an affiliate of the MLS team.

A native of Perth, Scotland, Clayes recently earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy. He currently hold a USSF “D,” NSCAA Junior VII and a Scottish FA Youth License. Clayes and his wife, Allyssa, currently reside in Brooklyn, N.Y.
