James Werner completed his third year on the Privateer Football staff in 2013.

Werner made the transition from Running Backs Coach in 2012 to Wide Receivers Coach for the 2013 season. Werner also handles the important job of coordinating and tracking the team academic progress and the 2012 squad attained the highest team GPA ever and landed 4 players on the Academic All-Conference Team and one on the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. Werner is also the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for the team, a job he was promoted to in 2012. The team has continued to break program lifting records.

During the 2011 season, Werner’s backfield improved significantly in blocking and contributed nearly 650 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns on the season. They also chipped in for nearly half of the team’s receiving yardage and another two touchdowns. When healthy, Thomas Davis was explosive reaching the end-zone 7 times in just 24 touches.

Werner came to Maritime after graduating in 2011 from Salve Regina University, where he boasted a 3.2 GPA and obtained degrees in Economics and Mathematics. He played three seasons for the Seahawks and saw action against the Privateers in 2008. After the 2009 season, injuries forced Werner to switch over to student coach and he assisted the team to their first winning season (6-4) in ten seasons.

A native of Huntington Station, N.Y., Werner attended Walt Whitman High School where he was a two-year starter at Offensive and Defensive Line and also lettered in wrestling and track. He has three years experience coaching for the Huntington Youth Football League and has spent four summers helping Walt Whitman High School in their off season program.
