THROGGS NECK, NY – After playing an exhibition game at Manhattan on Wednesday, the Maritime College men's soccer team officially began its 2026 campaign by hosting Nazareth on Sunday. Both sides scored on a penalty kick in the first half, but the Golden Flyers (2-0-0) notched a pair of tallies a minute apart early in the second half to notch a 3-1 victory over the Privateers (0-1-0) at Reinhart Field.
Nazareth earned a penalty kick just 2:41 into the contest, and Tyler Warmington converted from the spot to give the Golden Flyers a 1-0 lead. It remained that way until the 43
rd minute, when a foul in the box resulted in a Maritime PK.
Jeferson Blanco (San Pedro Sula, Honduras) stepped up and put it away, leveling the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
In the 54
th minute, Nazareth went back in front when Warmington ran down the middle, then found Caleb Rosado along the right side. Rosado's finish made it 2-1 in favor of the Golden Flyers. That lead increased to 3-1 just over a minute later when Samuel Burton headed in a Braden Callahan corner kick.
Blanco's penalty kick goal was the first by a Privateer since
Jude Callan at Sarah Lawrence on Oct. 11, 2026. As a team, Maritime has made six of its last seven penalty kick attempts dating back to the 2022 season. Goalkeeper
Aidan Slovensky (Manorville, NY) (0-1-0), meanwhile, was credited with five saves.
For Nazareth, Burton notched his third goal in the first two games of the season. Warmington recorded a goal and an assist, and Rosado's game-winner was his first tally of the year. Bryan Tirado (2-0-0) made one save in the winning effort.
On Tuesday, the Privateers take on NYU (3-0-0) at 7 p.m. The game, which is the first matchup between the teams since 2019, will be played at NJIT's Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
