NEW YORK – Entering Thursday night's match at CCNY, the Maritime College volleyball team was winless in five-setters this season. The Privateers are now 1-4 in five-set matches this year. Maritime (2-8) overcame a match point in the fifth set before rallying to notch its first five set triumph of the season, 25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 16-25, 17-15 over the Beavers (4-8) at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
After the Privateers took a 2-0 lead in the match, CCNY captured the third and fourth sets to force a decisive frame. The Beavers then jumped out to a 5-1 cushion in the final set. Maritime responded with a 5-0 run to go up 6-5 before CCNY went back in front, 8-6. The Beavers still held a two-point lead, 13-11, when an
Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) kill started a 3-0 spurt that gave the Privateers a match point at 14-13. CCNY captured the next two points to earn a match point opportunity of its own, but
Laci Werner (New York, BY) slammed a kill to tie the score and
Lara Cocis (Coeur d'Alene, ID) followed with a service ace to bring Maritime to match point again. This time, the Privateers converted, clinching a 17-15 set win and their first 3-2 match victory since last year's season-opening match against Mitchell.
Werner finished with a match-high 22 kills and added 11 digs.
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) also had a double-double with 15 kills (on .324 hitting) and 10 digs.
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) notched a double-double of her own with 45 assists and 16 digs, while Weist served three aces to go along with 16 digs.
Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) recorded a match-best 21 digs, as Maritime held an 83-80 edge in that category.
There were eight ties and four lead changes in the first set. The Privateers used a 4-0 rally to turn a 6-4 deficit into an 8-6 lead, but the Beavers countered with a 9-3 spurt to go in front, 15-11. CCNY still held a four-point advantage, 19-15, when Pavarini smashed a kill to start an 8-0 run that gave Maritime a 23-19 edge. Werner served an ace on set point to wrap up a 25-20 win.
The Privateers claimed the first three points of the second set before the Beavers went ahead 4-3. After Maritime regained an 8-4 advantage, CCNY used a 5-1 run to level the score at 9-9. The Privateers responded with a 12-5 spurt, however, to open up a 21-14 edge. An
Emma DeMuro (Mahopac, NY) kill finished off the set, 25-18, and gave Maritime a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Privateers raced out to an early 9-6 cushion. The Beavers claimed 10 of the next 12 points, though, to pull ahead, 16-11. After CCNY extended the margin to 20-13, a Pavarini kill sparked an 11-3 Maritime rally that brought the Privateers to match point. The Beavers took the next point to force a 24-24 deadlock, then earned their first set point opportunity at 25-24. CCNY also captured the next point to clinch the set, 26-24, and extend the match.
A Pavarini kill gave the Privateers an early 4-3 lead in the fourth set, but the Beavers rattled off the next eight points to go up 11-4. CCNY eventually increased the cushion to 10 points, 19-9, before Weist started a Maritime comeback effort with a kill. The Privateers took five of the next seven points to trim their deficit to 21-14. Maritime would get no closer, though, as the Beavers forced a fifth set with a 25-16 fourth-set triumph.
For CCNY, Lesly Almonte led the way with 13 kills. Rosalynda Russo notched a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs, while Holly Guzman also had 10 kills to go along with six digs and three aces. Yamilci Izquierdo handed out 41 assists, and Emery Ramirez-Espinosa paced four Beavers in double-figures with 21 digs. Rachael Reyes and Patricia Brooks finished with 11 digs apiece. Ivanna Zamora Sanchez, meanwhile, served five aces.
On Saturday, the Privateers travel to Drew for their final tri-match of the season. Maritime takes on the host Rangers (4-8) at 12 p.m. before facing Delaware Valley (1-9) at 2 p.m.
