THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College women's soccer team began Skyline Conference play with a matchup against St. Joseph's Brooklyn at Reinhart Field. With
Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) scoring four times and
Emani Abdool (Islandia, NY) notching a hat trick of her own, the Privateers (2-2-1, 1-0-0 Skyline) won their conference opener for the fifth straight year, 9-1 over the Bears (0-3-0, 0-1-0 Skyline).
Garcia and Abdool connected on Maritime's first tally in the 11
th minute, when Abdool took a free kick and found Garcia inside the box. She put it into the lower left side to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead. She then made it 2-0 by finishing after a 30-yard run in the 18
th minute. Abdool got into the act in the 40
th minute, beating the keeper one-on-one to increase the advantage to 3-0 at the break.
The duo each found the back of the net twice more in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Lindsay Dominguez put St. Joseph's Brooklyn on the board in the 78
th minute, but the Privateers weren't done, adding a pair of late tallies. In the 88
th minute,
Isabella Calfapietra (Bohemia, NY) recorded her first collegiate goal.
Richae Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas) then snuck behind the defense in the 89
th minute and put one away for the first time in her college career. The 9-1 final was Maritime's biggest scoring output since a 13-0 victory over Medgar Evers on Oct. 15, 2024, and its most goals in a conference game since beating Yeshiva 9-0 on Sept. 3, 2024.
With four goals, Garcia now has six on the season. Abdool, meanwhile, recorded her first career hat trick and moved into the conference lead with seven goals this year.
Nicole Mejia (Garden City, NY) (1-0-0) made the start in net and was credited with the win.
Bears goalkeeper Isabella Argento (0-3-0) faced 31 Privateer shots and made 13 saves. Dominguez's tally was her first of the season.
Up next for Maritime is a 4 p.m. matchup at Farmingdale (4-1-1, 1-0-0 Skyline) on Tuesday. It will mark the Privateers' first time visiting the Rams since 2023.
