MADISON, NJ – The Maritime College volleyball team hit the road for the only time in a five-match stretch on Thursday night, visiting FDU-Florham for a non-conference tilt. The Privateers (0-7) were unable to come away with the victory, however, as the Devils (6-3) notched a 25-14, 25-9, 25-17 triumph at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
There were three ties early in the first set. The score was level at 7-7 before FDU-Florham used a 10-3 spurt to build a 17-10 advantage. Maritime responded with back-to-back points, but the Devils rattled off the next six to extend the margin to 23-12. FDU-Florham took the opening set by a 25-14 count.
After the Privateers captured the first point of the second set, the Devils dominated the remainder of the frame. FDU-Florham posted a .414 hitting percentage (16 kills, four errors, 29 attempts) in the set, going ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-9 win.
With the Devils holding a 7-6 lead in the third set,
Lara Cocis (Coeur d'Alene, ID) smacked a kill to spark a 7-2 Maritime run that gave the Privateers a 13-9 lead. Maritime still held a 15-13 advantage when FDU-Florham went on an 8-0 rally to open up a 21-15 edge. The Devils completed the sweep by earning a 25-17 set win.
Laci Werner (New York, NY) paced the Privateers with eight kills.
Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY), meanwhile, tallied a team-best eight digs.
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) added seven digs to go along with 11 assists.
FDU-Florham hit an impressive .357 in the match, smashing 46 kills and committing just 11 errors in 98 attempts. Anya Panesar finished with a match-high 13 kills to go along with nine digs. Mackenzie Crandall had nine kills and four service aces, while Hannah Weinman also contributed nine kills. Amaya Ocasio posted a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs, and Arianna Wood notched 16 digs for the Devils.
On Saturday, Maritime plays its annual home tri-match. The Privateers take on Pratt (2-3) at 11 a.m. before facing York (1-1) at 3 p.m. The Cannoneers and Cardinals will meet each other in the middle match at 1 p.m.
