THROGGS NECK, NY – For the first time since 2019, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team has earned three of the Skyline Conference major awards for the 2026 season. Sophomore
Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) was named Skyline Offensive Player of the Year, while junior
Brody Smith (Rehoboth Beach, DE) was chosen as the Skyline Co-Defensive Player of the Year and freshman
Thomas McCarvill (Port Washington, NY) was the Privateers' second straight Skyline Rookie of the Year selection. In addition, Uzakewicz and Smith were among Maritime's four First Team All-Skyline players. McCarvill was one of five Privateers to receive a Second Team All-Skyline nod.
Joining Uzakewicz and Smith on the First Team were sophomores
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) and
Michael Weigand (Massapequa, NY). Maritime's other Second Team honorees were junior
Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY), junior
Christopher Laino (West Islip, NY), senior
Nick Spista (White Plains, NY) and junior
Collin Brush (Islip, NY).
Uzakewicz, last season's Skyline Rookie of the Year, is currently ranked second nationally with 4.33 assists per game. His school-record 10 assists against Purchase on April 25 were tied for the fifth most in a contest by any NCAA men's lacrosse player (across all three divisions) this season. A three-time Skyline Offensive Player of the Week in 2026, Uzakewicz averages over two assists per game more than the next-closest player in the league, and his 5.73 points per game are also a conference-high (by more than a point). He's recorded double-digit points in three of the Privateers' last four games. Uzakewicz becomes the first Maritime player to be recognized as Skyline Offensive Player of the Year since Matt DeMeo in 2019.
Smith, meanwhile, has played lockdown defense all season while typically marking the opponent's best offensive player. His 38 caused turnovers are third-most in the conference, and he ranks fourth in the league with 2.53 caused turnovers per outing. Smith has also collected 51 ground balls this season. He was named Skyline Defensive Player of the Week on April 13 after notching a season-high six caused turnovers in the win over Mount St. Mary. Smith shared the award with Farmingdale's Sean Lawson and is the third Privateer to earn the honor in the last four seasons (2024: Kieran Hendry, 2023: Matthew Weigand).
McCarvill is second on the team with 44 goals and third with 53 points. He scored seven goals, one off the single-game program record, against St. Joseph's LI on April 14 and has notched seven hat tricks this season. McCarvill ranks second in the league with 3.14 goals per game and seventh with 3.79 points per contest. He was named Skyline Rookie of the Week three times. Including McCarvill, the Privateers have now claimed five of the last seven Skyline Rookie of the Year awards.
Hannaford leads Maritime with 45 goals and is third in the conference with 4.31 points per game. Weigand has recorded five hat tricks, including a career-high five-goal performance in the victory at Merchant Marine on April 11. Mahood has appeared in all 16 games, contributing 22 goals and 21 ground balls. Also a member of the men's soccer team, Laino has won 56.4 percent of the faceoffs he's taken and leads the Privateers with 73 ground balls. Spista is also a two-sport athlete in both lacrosse and football. He has tallied 24 ground balls to go along with a pair of assists. Brush serves as an anchor for a defensive unit that has allowed the third-fewest goals in the conference. His 13 caused turnovers are second-most on the squad.
This is Uzakewicz's second straight First Team All-Skyline selection, while Smith, Hannaford and Weigand were all recognized by the conference for the first time. Brush received Second Team honors for the second time after previously being chosen in 2024. Spista, meanwhile, earned his second straight All-Skyline nod. He was on the First Team last season. This is the first career All-Skyline selection for McCarvill, Mahood and Laino.
Maritime (8-8, 6-1 Skyline) finished in a three-way tie for first place with Merchant Marine and Farmingdale for the third consecutive year. The Privateers will be the No. 3 seed in the Skyline Tournament and visit No. 2 Farmingdale (13-3, 6-1 Skyline), the defending champions, in the semifinals at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
