PURCHASE, NY – On April 11,
Nick Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) set a Maritime College men's lacrosse single-game program record with eight assists in a win at Merchant Marine. That mark lasted two weeks. Uzakewicz broke his own standard with 10 assists on Saturday, as the Privateers (8-8, 6-1 Skyline) concluded the regular season with a 25-3 victory over Purchase (1-11, 0-7 Skyline) on a rain-soaked Purchase College Turf Field.
Uzakewicz had a hand in seven of Maritime's 11 first-quarter goals, distributing five assists while also scoring twice. He added four assists in the second quarter, including three in a two-minute span, as the Privateers increased their advantage to 15-1. Uzakewicz handed out his record-setting ninth assist of the first half on
Tyler Mahood's (Sleepy Hollow, NY) tally that made it 17-1 with 4:14 remaining until halftime. The lead was 18-1 at the break.
At the 11:17 mark of the third quarter, Uzakewicz became the 11
th player in Division III with a double-digit assist game this season when he assisted on another Mahood goal. Maritime extended its cushion to 23-1 after three quarters, then got tallies from
James Gioia (Staten Island, NY) and
Thomas Pucciarelli (Monroe Township, NY) early in the fourth quarter to go up 25-1. The Panthers snapped the Privateers' 23-0 run with a pair of late man-up goals, cutting the final margin to 25-3.
Thirteen different players scored for Maritime, and 17 Privateers had at least one point. Uzakewicz finished with 12 points, while
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) had seven points on three goals and four assists. He also picked up four ground balls.
Thomas McCarvill (Port Washington, NY) found the back of the net five times, and
Joseph Fazio (Massapequa, NY) added four goals and an assist.
Christopher Laino (West Islip, NY) went 16-for-17 on faceoffs and collected 10 ground balls.
Teddy Dannhauser (Huntington, NY) recorded six ground balls, as Maritime held a 51-17 edge in that category.
Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (8-6) played the first half in goal and earned the win. He made four saves.
Brendan Kavanagh (White Plains, NY) was credited with a pair of saves in the second half.
Zach Scott played a role in all three Purchase goals, scoring twice and assisting on the other. Ryan Haberski had the other tally to go along with an assist. Liam Pheffer, Sam Erlich and Cameron Savoca led the Panthers with three ground balls apiece, and Savoca also caused two turnovers. Goalkeeper TJ Pasqualini (1-11) recorded 12 saves.
For the third consecutive season, the Privateers finished in a three-way tie with Merchant Marine and Farmingdale atop the final Skyline standings. Since the three teams all went 1-1 against each other and defeated every other team in the league, it came down to the third tiebreaker—goal differential—to determine the seeding for the Skyline Tournament. Maritime ended up as the No. 3 seed and will visit No. 2 Farmingdale (13-3, 6-1 Skyline) in the semifinals at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
