Dylan Payano (Flushing, NY) of the Maritime College baseball team has been chosen as the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week. He hit .407 (11-for-27) with two home runs, nine RBIs and 10 runs scored, as the Privateers went 5-2 across seven games.
In the doubleheader sweep at Manhattanville on Saturday, Payano went a combined 5-for-11 with five RBIs. He had an RBI single in the sixth inning of Game 1, then tied Game 2 at 8-8 with an RBI double in the eighth inning. Payano later ripped an RBI single and scored in the 10
th inning of the 18-14 victory. On Sunday against Merchant Marine, he reached base all four times in the first game, finishing 2-for-2 with two walks. Payano crushed a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the contest, cutting Maritime's deficit to three in an eventual 11-8 loss. He homered again in the first inning of Game 2 and scored three times in the 16-13 win.
Payano becomes the fourth different Privateer freshman to receive a Skyline weekly award this season.
Guytano Kiesel (Bayport, NY) previously took home Rookie of the Week honors on March 23, while
Joe Demos (South Hempstead, NY) (March 16) and
Ryan Morash (Merrick, NY) (March 30) have both been honored as the Skyline Pitcher of the Week. In addition, sophomore
Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) earned a Skyline Player of the Week nod on March 9.
First-place Maritime (14-11, 11-1 Skyline) is 12-3 over its last 15 games since March 19. The Privateers return to action on Tuesday, when they resume non-conference play by visiting FDU-Florham (14-15) at 3:30 p.m.
