THROGGS NECK, NY – Behind two outstanding pitching performances from
Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) and
Ryan Morash (Merrick, NY), the Maritime College baseball team swept a doubleheader with St. Joseph's Brooklyn on Saturday. Mylan tossed six scoreless innings in the opener, a 12-1 Privateers win, while Morash threw a five-hit shutout in Game 2, an 8-0 victory for Maritime (7-9, 4-0 Skyline) over the Bears (1-12, 0-4 Skyline) at Reinhart Baseball Field.
After
Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) homered in the first inning of Game 1, the Privateers increased their lead to 4-0 with a three-run second.
Dylan Payano (Flushing, NY) and
Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) each knocked an RBI single before
Chris Picarella (Levittown, NY) drew a bases loaded walk.
Maritime added one in the fourth, then broke the game open with a six-spot in the fifth. Picarella's two-run single capped the rally and made it 11-0. Bardi, meanwhile, picked up his third RBI of the game on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth. St. Joseph's Brooklyn avoided the shutout when George Demacopoulos singled home a run in the top of the seventh. The next batter grounded into a double play, however, to finish off the 12-1 victory for the Privateers.
Mylan (2-3) gave up just four hits, struck out nine and walked two.
Colin McKeon (Mullica Hill, NJ) pitched the seventh and allowed one run on three this with a walk. Offensively, the Privateers collected 12 hits, with
Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) reaching base all four times. He finished 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Bardi was 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored and three RBIs, and Picarella went 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Payano also recorded a pair of RBIs while scoring twice.
For the Bears, Justin Haluck and Joe Meglio both ended up 2-for-4. Nicholas Mirabella (0-3) made the start on the mound and took the loss. He yielded four runs on five hits, struck out two and walked five in 2.1 innings. Camden Wallace followed with 2.2 innings and surrendered seven runs, while Brian Danowski was charged with a run on one hit in the sixth. He issued two walks and recorded a strikeout.
St. Joseph's Brooklyn left runners stranded on first and third in the second inning of Game 2. Maritime then took advantage of three Bears errors to score five times in the bottom half of the inning. The Privateers got on the board after back-to-back doubles by
Dominick Viggiano (Miller Place, NY) and
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) before a Bardi single drove in two.
It would remain 5-0 until the seventh, when Picarella and
David Granucci (Medford, NY) each crushed a solo home run to left. After Picarella hit an RBI single in the eighth, Morash went back out for the top of the ninth looking to complete the shutout. He struck out the first batter before inducing two ground balls to finish off the 8-0 triumph.
Morash (2-1) pitched his second five-hit, complete game shutout of the season. He had a career-best 10 strikeouts and only walked one. The Maritime offense had 12 more hits in Game 2, with Picarella finishing 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Ventura, Goodman and Viggiano all contributed two hits, while Payano scored twice. Bardi, meanwhile, tallied two RBIs, giving him five for the twinbill.
Matt Arcati recorded a pair of singles for two of St. Joseph's Brooklyn's five hits. Antonio Moran (0-6) took the loss after giving up seven runs (three earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 6.1 innings. Kris Vinski pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and recording two strikeouts.
On Sunday, the Privateers welcome Old Westbury (5-7, 1-3 Skyline) to Reinhart Baseball Field for a 12 p.m. doubleheader. It will mark the end of a span where Maritime played 12 out of 13 on its home field (including two twinbills in which the Privateers were the "visiting" team).
