Privateers Combine For 30 Runs In Two Wins Over Old Westbury

THROGGS NECK, NY – One day after getting two dominant pitching performances, the Maritime College baseball team's offense was the story on Sunday.  The Privateers (9-9, 6-0 Skyline) had 30 total runs in a doubleheader sweep of Old Westbury (5-9, 1-5 Skyline) at Reinhart Baseball Field, notching a 12-9 victory in the opener before taking Game 2 by an 18-4 count.  Maritime has now won seven of its last eight games.

There were six home runs—three for each team—in Game 1.  After the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) delivered a no-doubt-about-it three-run shot to left in the bottom half of the inning.  Each team got a solo homer in the second before James Reilly put Old Westbury in front with a three-run blast in the top of the third.  Maritime immediately responded with a four-spot in its half of the inning, though, as Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) and Dominick Viggiano (Miller Place, NY) each drove in a pair with a single.

Goodman made it 10-6 with a two-run homer in the fourth, then scored on David Granucci's (Medford, NY) RBI double in the sixth.  Granucci later came around when Viggiano reached on an error, increasing the Privateers' advantage to 12-7.  Sean Maddi crushed his second home run of the contest, a two-run knock to right center, to bring the Panthers within 12-9 in the top of the seventh.  The next batter was hit by a pitch, but JJ Palumbo grounded into a double play to finish off the game.

As a team, Maritime pounded out 15 hits.  Bardi finished a triple shy of the cycle, while Goodman was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs.  Viggiano went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs, and Chris Picarella (Levittown, NY) ended up 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) and Dylan Payano (Flushing, NY) also had two hits in the contest.

Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) got the start on the mound and lasted 3.2 innings.  He allowed six runs on seven hits, struck out two and walked one.  Jackson Tucholski (Massapequa, NY) gave up a run on one hit and two walks in one inning of work, while Luke Martinez (Mineola, NY) (1-1) pitched the final 2.1 innings and earned the win.  He yielded two runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.

For Old Westbury, Maddi collected three RBIs on his two home runs.  Mike Tiseo was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Brandon Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.  Starting pitcher Dennis Lynch (1-1) took the loss after surrendering eight runs on seven hits and two walks in two-plus innings.  Joe Randello pitched the final four innings and was charged with four runs (three earned) on eight hits while walking two.

After the Privateers scored twice in the first inning of Game 2, the Panthers plated three runs without the benefit of a hit in the top of the second.  Maritime countered with a three-spot of its own in the bottom half of the inning, though.  Guytano Kiesel (Bayport, NY) and Viggiano both scored on wild pitches before Bardi made it 5-3 with an RBI single to left.

The Privateers then broke the game open with an eight-run third.  Viggiano drove in a pair with a single, and Payano added a two-run single of his own two batters later.  After Bardi walked to load the bases, Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) smashed a grand slam to right that increased Maritime's advantage to 13-3.  Viggiano and Payano each had an RBI single in the fourth, then the Privateers scored three more runs in the sixth.  Old Westbury's AJ Giel hit a solo homer in with two out in the top of the seventh before Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) got a ground ball to wrap up the sweep and a 4-0 weekend for Maritime.

Eight different Privateers had a hit in Game 2, and nine Maritime players scored.  Viggiano reached base all four times, going 3-for-3 while also getting hit by a pitch.  He scored four runs and drove in three.  Ventura also reached base every time, finishing 3-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored.  Granucci crossed the plate three times, and Bardi came around twice.  Payano went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Weber finished with five RBIs.

Starting pitcher Joe Demos (South Hempstead, NY) (2-0) tossed six innings, allowing three runs on one hit with four strikeouts.  He was charged with five walks, as well.  Kellner gave up a run, a hit and a walk in the seventh.

Giel's home run and a first-inning single by Hernandez were the Panthers' only two hits in Game 2.  Declan Krogman (0-1) started on the mound for Old Westbury and took the loss.  He surrendered six runs on four hits, struck out two and walked three.

Up next for the Privateers is a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Mount St. Mary (7-11, 2-2 Skyline) on Thursday.  It will be the first time the teams are meeting since the Knights eliminated Maritime in the first round of last year's Skyline Tournament.
