Maritime Goes Five With Mount St. Vincent

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team played five sets for the third straight match and the ninth time this season on Thursday night.  The Privateers (4-20, 1-9 Skyline) built a 2-1 lead before Mount St. Vincent (7-15, 4-5 Skyline) won the final two sets to notch a 25-23, 18-25, 26-28, 25-19, 15-12 victory at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

After the Dolphins jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the first set, Lara Cocis (Coeur d'Alene, ID) slammed a kill to start a 7-0 Maritime run that put the Privateers in front 11-7.  Maritime still held a 16-13 advantage when Mount St. Vincent used an 8-1 spurt to regain a four-point edge, 21-17.  The Privateers responded with four straight kills to tie it at 21-21, but the Dolphins rallied to get a set point opportunity at 24-22.  Maritime fought off one on a block Andressa Dias-Moreira (Forest Hills, NY) before Mount St. Vincent closed out a 25-23 set win.

In the second set, the Dolphins again built an early cushion, 5-2, but the Privateers stormed back to go in front 9-8.  After Mount St. Vincent scored the next four points, a Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) kill started a 7-2 run that gave Maritime a 16-14 lead.  The Dolphins forced an 18-18 deadlock before Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) smashed a kill to put the Privateers back in front.  Maritime won the final seven points of the frame, taking the set 25-18 to level the match.

It was the Privateers who took the early 5-2 advantage in the third set.  Maritime still held a 9-6 lead when Mount St. Vincent went on a 12-4 run to go ahead 18-13.  The Privateers responded with a 9-2 spurt of their own to regain a 22-20 edge, and Maritime reached set point at 24-23.  After earning two more set point opportunities at 25-24 and 26-25, the Privateers finally clinched it on their fourth chance.  Cocis served an ace to wrap up the 28-26 set win that gave Maritime a 2-1 lead in the contest.

Pavarini paced the Privateers with 16 kills while adding 16 digs.  Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) also had a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs.  She hit .286 in the match.  Thiel finished with 42 assists to go along with seven digs and four aces.  Dias-Moreira, meanwhile, tallied eight kills and five blocks.  Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) contributed 24 digs, as Maritime held a 74-62 edge in that category.

There were six ties and five lead changes early in the fourth set.  The Privateers went in front 12-6, but the Dolphins countered with 10 of the next 13 points to take a 16-15 lead.  After Maritime rattled off three straight points to regain the advantage, 18-16, Mount St. Vincent responded with a 7-0 run to go up 23-18.  The Dolphins forced a decisive frame with a 25-19 set win.
