Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Offense Leads Privateers to Second Straight Win

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team set season-highs for points, field goal percentage and free throw percentage while leading nearly wire-to-wire on Saturday afternoon.  Four players scored in double-figures for the Privateers (7-6, 3-1 Skyline) who earned their second straight victory with a 93-76 victory over Old Westbury (3-10, 1-3 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) finished with 18 points to go along with eight assists and five rebounds.  Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) had 15 points, seven boards and five assists, while Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) tallied 15 points, five assists and four steals.  Ayden Alleyne (Brentwood, NY) added a career-high 14 points, and Chris Zaveckas (Merrick, NY) notched eight points off the bench.  As a team, Maritime shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the field, 32 percent (8-of-25) from long range, and 80.6 percent (25-of-31) at the charity stripe.

Old Westbury built an early 5-3 cushion before the Privateers used a 12-2 run to open up a 15-7 lead.  Maritime's advantage reached 17 points when a pair of Anderson free throws made it 31-14 with 8:31 left in the first half.  The Panthers countered with a 15-6 spurt to get back within eight, 37-29, at the 3:59 mark, but the Privateers responded with 10 straight points to extend the margin to 47-29.  An Evan Block (Seaford, NY) layup just before the halftime buzzer gave Maritime a 51-33 edge at the break.

After Old Westbury cut its deficit to 15 points, 53-38, early in the second half, the Privateers went on a 19-10 spurt to take their largest lead of the game, 72-48.  The Panthers pulled within 78-61 at the 7:08 mark before Alleyne scored nine points during a 10-2 run that brought Maritime's advantage to 88-65 with 3:29 left.  Old Westbury then ended the contest on an 11-5 rally to make the final margin 93-76.

For the Panthers, Jermaine King Jr. posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 assists.  He also recorded three steals.  Joel Ofori contributed 15 points and seven rebounds for Old Westbury, which shot a combined 45.3 percent (29-of-64) from the floor.  The Panthers were 9-for-28 (32.1 percent) from downtown and 9-for-11 (81.8 percent) at the free throw line.

Up next for the Privateers is a 7 p.m. matchup with defending Skyline champion Farmingdale (11-2, 4-0 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Wednesday.  It will be the first meeting between the teams since the Rams eliminated Maritime in the semifinals of last season's Skyline Tournament.
