THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College women's soccer team welcomed Mount St. Vincent to Reinhart Field. The Privateers (2-2-0, 1-1-0 Skyline) scored their first goal against the Dolphins (3-1-1, 1-0-0 Skyline) since 2011, but ultimately suffered a 10-1 defeat to last year's Skyline regular season champions.
Mount St. Vincent got on the board early, opening the scoring in the ninth minute when Victoria Gamarra's shot bounced off the post and just crossed the goal line. The Dolphins added three more tallies in the next 20 minutes and took that 4-0 advantage into the break. After Mount St. Vincent extended the margin to 8-0,
Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) raced down the left side and beat the keeper 1-on-1 for Maritime's first goal in its last 13 matchups against the Dolphins. Mount St. Vincent then closed out the scoring with a pair of late goals.
Garcia, who found the back of the net five times against Yeshiva on Wednesday, has notched nine of the Privateers' nine goals this season. She currently leads the league and ranks third nationally in scoring. Maritime goalkeeper
Estela Quintero (Oceanside, NY) (2-2-0), meanwhile, was credited with nine saves.
Thirteen different Dolphins had at least one point in the game. Gamarra and Emily Legler each finished with two goals and an assist, while Eva Puentes recorded a goal and an assist. Ima Kellerman distributed two assists for Mount St. Vincent. Javiera Sanchez (1-1-1) got the start in net and made one save in 30 minutes of action. Goalkeepers Kaitlyn Grady and Ella De Kruyf both played 30 minutes in relief.
Up next for the Privateers is a 6 p.m. matchup at St. Joseph's LI (3-2-1, 1-1-0 Skyline) on Wednesday.
