Maritime Earns 3-0 Victory Against CCNY

THROGGS NECK, NY – Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) and Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) combined for 24 kills on Thursday night to lead the Maritime College volleyball team (4-2) past CCNY (0-3) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.  After two tight sets, the Privateers dominated the third to notch a 25-23, 26-24, 25-15 triumph over the Beavers.

Weist finished with 14 kills, while Devaney just missed a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs.  She also had three service aces.  Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) tallied 22 assists to go along with 10 digs, and Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) recorded a match-high 16 digs.  Alexa Nolan (Queens, NY) and Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) added six digs apiece for Maritime.

In the first set, there were seven ties and four lead changes.  The Privateers scored the first three points of the match before CCNY rallied to take a 13-9 advantage.  Maritime responded with a 12-2 run, though, to go up 21-15.  An Emma DeMuro (Mahopac, NY) block brought the Privateers to set point at 24-18, but the Beavers rattled off the next five points, prompting a Maritime timeout.  On the Privateers' sixth set point opportunity, Weist slammed a kill to close out a 25-23 win.

After CCNY opened up a 6-2 lead to start the second set, Maritime countered with a 6-2 run of its own to level the score at 8-8.  The Beavers again built a four-point cushion at 16-12 before the Privateers used a 4-0 spurt to force a 16-16 draw.  Maritime took its first advantage of the set at 19-18, but CCNY claimed six of the next seven points to pull ahead, 24-20.  The Privateers fought off four set points before earning one of their own on a Nicole Scourakis (Hampton Bays, NY) kill.  Maritime also won the set point to finish off a 26-24 comeback and go ahead 2-0 in the match.

The Privateers then jumped out to an 8-1 advantage in the third set and never looked back.  Maritime increased its cushion to 17-4 on a Xieana Rodriguez (Queens, NY) ace.  After CCNY cut the margin to six points at 20-14, the Privateers went on a 4-0 run to reach match point.  A Weist kill wrapped up the set, 25-15, and the 3-0 victory.

For the Beavers, Rachael Reyes led the way with eight kills.  She added 11 digs.  Danuzia Caixeta Palmer posted a double-double with 19 assists and 13 digs, while Fatimah Coppin contributed 12 digs.  Ivanna Zamora Sanchez also reached double-figures with 10 digs.

On Tuesday, Maritime continues its six-match homestand with a 7 p.m. matchup against NJCU (5-0).  It will be the Golden Knights' first-ever visit to Riesenberg Gymnasium.
