Privateers Sweep Skyline Twinbill at Purchase

PURCHASE, NY – On Sunday, the Maritime College baseball team traveled to Purchase for a Skyline Conference doubleheader.  After holding on for a 6-4 victory in the opener, the Privateers (13-10, 6-0 Skyline) completed the sweep of the Panthers (8-15, 5-3 Skyline) with a 7-2 victory in the second game at Purchase College Baseball Field.

Maritime struck early in Game 1, putting up a five-spot in the top of the first.  The first six Privateers all reached, with Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) roping an RBI single to left before Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) drew a bases loaded walk and David Granucci (Medford, NY) singled home a run.  After a sacrifice fly by Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) made it 4-0, Leipold took home on the back end of a double steal to give Maritime a 5-0 lead.

Purchase got one in the bottom of the first, but the Privateers manufactured a run in the top of the second.  Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) walked, then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch.  Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) followed with a sacrifice fly that knocked in Bardi.  The Panthers pulled within 6-2 in the bottom half of the inning when Evan Biener led off with a triple before coming across on Julian Diaz's sacrifice fly.

It would remain 6-2 until the bottom of the fourth.  Purchase loaded the bases with nobody out and scored a run on a groundout.  Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) got out of the inning without any more damage, though, and Maritime retained their 6-3 advantage.  After a pair of singles and an error brought the Panthers within 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Purchase put the tying run on base when pinch hitter Matthew Dragotto walked.  However, Jared Kay (Lewes, DE) kept the runners right there, inducing a fly ball and a popup to lock down the victory.

Granucci went 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, while Martinson was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.  Bardi, meanwhile, finished 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.  Colin McKeon (Mullica Hill, NJ) started on the mound and lasted three innings.  He yielded three runs on six hits, struck out two and walked three.  Kellner (1-0) earned the win after holding the Panthers to one unearned run and three hits over 3.1 innings.  He recorded three strikeouts and issued three walks.  Kay pitched the final 0.2 innings to pick up his second save of the season.

For Purchase, Biener was 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.  Mason Compton had two hits, while Panos Sinis went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  After a shaky start, Myles Scarry ended up tossing a complete game.  He allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits, struck out five and walked two.

In Game 2, the Privateers took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second.  Granucci started the inning with a single up the middle before Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) belted a two-run homer to left.  After John Carollo (Staten Island, NY) was hit by a pitch, he moved to second on Chris Picarella's (Levittown, NY) sacrifice bunt and scored on an Owen Weber (Staten Island, NY) double.  Weber then came around on a Frazzetta sacrifice fly.  The advantage reached 6-0 on Goodman's two-run double in the third.

That was more than enough offense for Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY).  One day after pitching two innings and earning the win in Game 2 of the doubleheader against Manhattanville, he threw seven innings in another winning effort.  Sorge (4-3) gave up just one run on five hits, struck out six and didn't walk anybody.

After Maritime increased its cushion to 7-1 with an unearned tally in the top of the eighth, Liam Daly hit a solo home run off Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score 7-2.  Mylan tossed the final two innings, surrendering three hits and notching one strikeout.

Offensively, the Privateers pounded out 11 hits.  Weber finished 3-for-6 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, while Granucci was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.  Goodman went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs, and Leipold also had two hits for Maritime.

Scarry, Daly and Frank Rega each recorded two hits for the Panthers.  Christian Miesegaes (3-3) started on the mound and took the loss.  He gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits in two innings.  Brandon Reybok followed with six innings out of the bullpen and surrendered just one unearned run and two hits.  He struck out two and walked six.  Isaiah Rubin-Patel pitched a scoreless ninth, yielding one hit and posting one strikeout.

The Privateers now have a week off until returning to action.  Maritime hosts Mount St. Vincent (12-8, 3-5 Skyline) for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, April 13.
