Maritime’s Bats Stymied By Mount St. Vincent

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College baseball team played a pair of pitchers' duels on Sunday.  The Privateers came up short in both ends of the doubleheader, however.  After suffering a 3-1 loss in the opener, Maritime (13-12, 6-2 Skyline) dropped a 4-1 decision to Mount St. Vincent (16-8, 7-5 Skyline) in the second game at Reinhart Baseball Field.

In Game 1, Matt Demme (Carmel, NY) worked his way out of bases loaded jams in the first and second innings before retiring eight Dolphins in a row.  The Privateers then scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third.  Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) started the inning with a single to right, then moved to second on Michael Frazzetta's (Howard Beach, NY) groundout.  Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) was up next, and he belted a double to left that knocked in Bardi.

It would remain that way until the seventh.  Demme got the first out, but was pulled after hitting Dom Porto with a pitch.  Jared Kay (Lewes, DE) came in out of the bullpen and struck out the first batter he faced.  However, Jason Albert kept Mount St. Vincent alive with a single before JT Jimenez launched a go-ahead three-run homer to left.  Michael Iocco then sent Maritime down in order in the bottom of the seventh to close out the Dolphins' 3-1 win.

Demme took a no-decision after allowing one run on six hits in 6.1 innings.  He notched four strikeouts and walked three.  Kay (0-2) pitched the final 0.2 innings and suffered the loss.  He was charged with two runs on two hits and tallied two strikeouts.  Offensively, the Privateers were limited to just six hits, with Frazzetta going 2-for-4 with a double.  Leipold finished 1-for-2 with an RBI double, while Bardi was 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Granata, Albert and Zach Turko each had two hits for Mount St. Vincent.  Jimenez, meanwhile, ended up 1-for-2 with a three-run homer.  Luke Buyes (1-1) made the start on the mound and earned the win.  He gave up one run on six hits, struck out nine and walked four.

Porto and Joshua McCormick started Game 2 with back-to-back doubles, immediately putting the Dolphins in front.  That 1-0 advantage would hold until the top of the seventh, when Porto and McCormick again hit consecutive doubles off Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY).

After recording just one hit over the first seven innings, Maritime put a two-out rally together in the bottom of the eighth.  Chris Picarella (Levittown, NY) sent a ball that was just fair down the right field line for a double, and the next batter, Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) was hit by a pitch.  That brought up Bardi, who laced an RBI single to center.  Frazzetta drew a walk to load the bases, but Leipold struck out to end the threat.

Mount St. Vincent then picked up two insurance tallies in the top of the ninth.  Conor Martin started the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.  He stayed there on a ground ball to short with the infield drawn in, but McCormick followed with a shot to left that carried for a two-run homer that increased the Dolphins' cushion to 4-1.

David Granucci (Medford, NY) was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the ninth, then, after a pair of strikeouts, Alex Guzman (Holliswood, NY) singled to left.  Picarella followed with a walk to load the bases.  However, Weber grounded into a game-ending fielder's choice and the Privateers fell by a 4-1 count.

Heiderstadt (4-1) made the start on the mound and lasted seven innings.  He yielded two runs on five hits, struck out five and walked one.  Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits and recording one strikeout.  Offensively, Maritime was held to just four hits—three singles and Picarella's double.

McCormick drove in all four Mount St. Vincent runs.  He finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run.  Porto, meanwhile, was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored.  Dolphins starting pitcher Jake Bland (2-1) gave up only one hit in seven shutout innings.  Justin Dutzer allowed one run on two hits in 0.2 innings, while Shawn Ryan notched a walk and a strikeout in 0.1 innings.  Iocco recorded his second save of the day and fourth of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth.  He surrendered one hit, walked one and struck out two.

On Tuesday, the Privateers travel to FDU-Florham (13-18) for a non-conference matchup that gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
