MADISON, NJ – On Tuesday, the Maritime College baseball team began a string of four straight road games with a non-conference matchup at FDU-Florham. The Privateers (14-12) scored three runs in the top of the first and never looked back, defeating the Devils (13-19) by a 12-6 count at Naimoli Ballpark.
Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) started the first-inning rally with a single, and
Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) followed with a single. Weber came across on
Michael Frazzetta's (Howard Beach, NY) double to center, then
John Spallin (Holmdel, NJ) made it 3-0 with a two-run double. FDU-Florham plated one in the bottom of the first before Bardi doubled home a run to give Maritime a 4-1 advantage in the top of the second.
After the Devils pulled within 4-2 in their half of the second, the Privateers regained the three-run lead with an unearned tally in the fourth. Maritime added three in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) led off the sixth with a triple before stealing home.
Chris Picarella (Levittown, NY) and Weber each singled home a run, while Bardi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put the Privateers ahead 12-2.
FDU-Florham mounted a late rally, however. The Devils scored one run in the eighth, then each of their first five hitters reached in the ninth. An RBI single by Aaron Santos was followed by consecutive bases loaded walks that trimmed FDU-Florham's deficit to 12-6 with nobody out.
Jared Kay (Lewes, DE) kept it right there, though, getting two strikeouts and a line drive to finish off the victory.
Bardi finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs, while Spallin was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. He also walked twice. Frazzetta ended up 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs, and Weber went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Alex Guzman (Holliswood, NY), meanwhile, drew three walks and crossed the plate twice.
Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY) made the start on the mound and lasted four innings. He allowed two runs on three hits, struck out four and didn't issue a walk.
Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) (5-3) earned the win after retiring all six batters he faced. He was credited with three strikeouts. Overall, Maritime used six pitchers, who combined for 13 strikeouts.
For the Devils, Santos and Nicholas Colbert each went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Santos also drove in a run. Jack Giovenco scored twice for FDU-Florham. Starting pitcher Christian Weippert (1-2) tossed two innings and took the loss. He surrendered four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
