Demme Shuts Out St. Joseph’s Brooklyn In Game 1 of Sweep

BROOKLYN, NY – Matt Demme (Carmel, NY) pitched his fourth career shutout on Saturday, as the Maritime College baseball team earned a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph's Brooklyn in the opener of a doubleheader at American Legion Field.  In the second game, the Privateers' offense was the story, as Maritime (16-12, 8-2 Skyline) completed a sweep of the Bears (2-17, 0-12 Skyline) with a 19-2 victory.

Demme (4-2) allowed just three hits and struck out five while not issuing a walk in his gem.  Two of those hits came in the second inning, and St. Joseph's Brooklyn didn't have a runner get past second base the entire game.  This was Demme's first shutout since March 30, 2024, when he blanked the Bears 5-0 at Reinhart Baseball Field.  Demme has thrown 16 consecutive scoreless innings against St. Joseph's Brooklyn and hasn't given up a run to the Bears since April 2, 2022.

Offensively, the Privateers got the only run they needed before Demme even stepped on the mound.  Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) reached on an error leading off the game, then stole second before scoring on Michael Frazzetta's (Howard Beach, NY) RBI single.

Weber and Frazzetta were also involved in Maritime's two-run third inning.  Chris Picarella (Levittown, NY) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on Weber's single to left.  Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) was up next, and he sent a fly ball to right that was deep enough for Picarella to advance to third.  Frazzetta then lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.  After Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) reached on an error to extend the inning, David Granucci (Medford, NY) knocked in Weber with a single.

The 3-0 triumph was the Privateers' first shutout of the season and third straight shutout win over St. Joseph's Brooklyn.  Six different players had hits for Maritime, with John Spallin's (Holmdel, NJ) double the only one going for extra bases.  Frazzetta drove in a pair of runs and Weber scored twice.

Andrew Ardito (0-5) pitched well for the Bears in a losing effort.  He also tossed a complete game, and only one of the Privateers' runs was earned.  Ardito walked one.

In Game 2, Maritime erupted for a seven-spot in the top of the first.  The first five hitters all reached, and two runs scored on bases loaded walks, while three came across on wild pitches.  The Privateers also got an RBI single from Granucci and an RBI double from Spallin in the inning.

Maritime added single runs in the second, third and fourth before plating three in the fifth.  Goodman drew a leadoff walk and scored on a wild pitch, while Weber doubled in another run.  He later came across on a wild pitch to increase the Privateers' lead to 13-1.

After St. Joseph's Brooklyn's Michael Gardener made it 13-2 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, Maritime put up six runs in the top of the seventh.  Weber started the rally with a base hit, while Bardi was hit by a pitch and Frazzetta walked to load the bases.  Two consecutive walks followed by two hat batters resulted in four runs.  Alex Guzman (Holliswood, NY) then picked up an RBI when he beat out a potential double play ball, and Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) closed out the scoring with an RBI single.

Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) worked around a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh to wrap up the 19-2 win.  He followed Demme's complete game by tossing one of his own.  Heiderstadt (5-1) held the Bears to two runs on three hits, struck out two and walked three.

Granucci finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Weber was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Spallin had two hits and crossed the plate twice.  Leipold scored four times and drove in a pair.  Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY), meanwhile, got on base in all five of his plate appearances.  He was hit by two pitches, walked twice and added a single.  Goodman came around three times and collected a pair of RBIs.

For St. Joseph's Brooklyn, Joe Meglio was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Miguel Toribio had a double and a run scored.  Starting pitcher Matthew Espinal (0-2) faced just four batters, issuing three walks and hitting the fourth with a pitch.  All four came around to score.  Dominic Yumul followed with 4.1 innings out of the bullpen before Ryan Wnorowski tossed 1.2 innings and Chris Perez pitched one inning of relief.

Up next for the Privateers is a 7 p.m. matchup with CCNY (8-7) at Reinhart Baseball Field on Monday.  It will be Maritime's final non-conference game of the season and was added to the schedule as a replacement for Tuesday's contest at Ramapo that was cancelled.
