Privateers Take Two From Yeshiva

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College baseball team began a stretch of three Skyline Conference doubleheaders in three days by hosting Yeshiva for a twinbill on Friday.  The Privateers (19-12, 10-2 Skyline) put up 14 runs in each contest, posting a 14-0 shutout in the opener before earning a 14-4 victory over the Maccabees (1-21, 0-14 Skyline) in Game 2 at Reinhart Baseball Field.

Maritime batted around in the first inning of Game 1, putting five runs on the board.  The Privateers plated five more unearned tallies in the second, increasing their lead to 10-0.  Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) crushed a two-run homer in the third, and Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) later added a sacrifice fly to make it 13-0.  In the bottom of the fourth, John Spallin (Holmdel, NJ) roped an RBI double that gave Maritime a 14-0 edge.

Haydn Strycharz (Pittstown, NJ), Nick Capone (Deer Park, NY) and Kayleb Wray (Wilmington, NC) combined on the five-hit shutout.  Strycharz (1-0) got the start and earned the win.  He allowed four hits, struck out five and walked one over four innings.  Capone recorded four strikeouts and yielded just one hit over two innings, while Wray retired the side in the seventh and notched a pair of strikeouts.

Spallin had three doubles in the game.  He finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.  David Granucci (Medford, NY), meanwhile, was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.  Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) and Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) each scored three times, and Leipold drove in three runs.

For Yeshiva, Jacob Canner went 2-for-3 at the plate.  Eli Zirdok (1-4) took the loss after surrendering 13 runs (eight hits) on 11 hits and two walks over two innings.  Samuel Weisman and Mendy Kanofsky each followed with two innings of relief.

In Game 2, the Maccabees took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before the Privateers responded with six runs in their half of the inning.  Leipold then belted a homer to right in the second that extended Maritime's advantage to 7-1.  After Yeshiva pulled within 7-3 in the top of the third, Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) went deep in the bottom half of the inning.

Jake Arnow homered to center for the Maccabees in the top of the fifth, but Maritime immediately countered with two runs.  Goodman delivered an RBI double, then came around on a wild pitch.  Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) extended the lead to 11-4 with his leadoff homer to right center in the sixth, and Bardi sent the game to an early finish with a three-run blast to left in the bottom of the eighth that gave the Privateers a 14-4 victory.

Leipold ended up a triple short of the cycle in Game 2, finishing 4-for-4 with a double, a homer, three runs scored and two RBIs.  Goodman was also a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.  He went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.  In addition to notching a double, a homer and two runs scored at the plate, Weber made the start on the mound and tossed three innings.  The first six outs he recorded were strikeouts, and Weber recorded seven strikeouts overall while allowing three unearned runs on four hits and a walk.

Gavin McIntyre (Princess Anne, MD) (1-0) threw three innings out of the bullpen and got credit for the win.  He gave up just one run and one hit (the homer), struck out three and walked one.  Evan Block (Seaford, NY) pitched two shutout innings, yielding two hits and tallying three strikeouts.

Yeshiva starter Yehuda Speyer (0-2) lasted five innings.  He allowed 11 runs (five earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks.  After throwing two scoreless innings in Game 1, Kanofsky tossed two innings in Game 2 and surrendered three runs on three hits and a walk.

Offensively, Arnow finished 2-for-4 with a homer, three runs scored and an RBI, while Noah Steinmetz also had two hits for the Maccabees.  Canner was 1-for-2 and recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

With the two wins, Maritime moved into a tie with Farmingdale (17-9, 10-2 Skyline) for first place in the Skyline standings.  The Privateers and Rams will square off on Saturday for a doubleheader at Reinhart Baseball Field that gets underway at 12 p.m.
