PATCHOGUE, NY – On Sunday, the Maritime College baseball team visited three-time defending Skyline Conference champion St. Joseph's LI for a doubleheader. After dropping a 5-1 decision in the opener, the Privateers (19-14, 10-4 Skyline) took a 7-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2. However, the Golden Eagles (22-13, 12-4 Skyline) rallied to earn a 9-8 victory in 10 innings and complete the sweep at Gregg Alfano Field.
In Game 1, St. Joseph's LI immediately struck for three runs in the bottom of the first. Maritime got one back when
Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) scored on
Owen Weber's (Kings Park, NY) sacrifice fly in the third. However, Jordan Ramlogan's second RBI hit of the game in the bottom of the third made it 4-1 in favor of the Golden Eagles. St. Joseph's LI then increased its lead to 5-1 on Joe Thatcher's home run in the fifth.
Golden Eagles starter Peter Manger, meanwhile, completely shut down the Privateers' offense. After Goodman scored in the third,
Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) was Maritime's only other baserunner. He walked in the fourth and had a leadoff single in the seventh before being erased on a double play. Manger (3-1) gave up one run on two hits, struck out four and issued one walk in a complete game effort.
Offensively, St. Joseph's LI had six hits in the contest. Ramlogan finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Anselmo Joya was 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored. Thatcher also scored twice.
Matt Demme (Carmel, NY) (4-3) got the start on the mound for the Privateers and took the loss. He gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits, walked two and struck out two in 2.1 innings.
Colin McKeon (Mullica Hill, NJ) pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits while notching two strikeouts.
After Maritime was held to just two total hits in Game 1, Weber and
Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) started Game 2 with back-to-back singles.
Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out, and Leipold followed with a walk. Another run scored on an error before
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) roped an RBI single.
John Spallin (Holmdel, NJ) then made it 6-0 with a three-run double. Bardi added an RBI double for his second hit of the inning to increase the Privateers' advantage to 7-0 before
Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) even threw a pitch.
However, the Golden Eagles gradually chipped away at the lead. After scoring one run in the second, St. Joseph's LI put up a three-spot in the third before adding one in the fourth and another in the fifth. The Golden Eagles then went ahead, 8-7, on Joe Hackal's bunt single in the eighth.
It was Maritime's turn to respond in the top of the ninth. Bardi tripled with one out, and Frazzetta followed with an RBI single that tied the game at 8-8. He was left stranded on first, though, and St. Joseph's LI didn't score in the bottom of the ninth, sending the contest into extra innings. After the Privateers went down in order, James Maggio began the bottom of the 10
th with a single. He stole second, then came around with the winning run on Marco Gullo's walk-off single.
Heiderstadt lasted six innings on the mound for Maritime, giving up seven runs (five earned) and eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) (5-4) took the loss after surrendering two runs on six hits over 3.1 innings. He struck out three while not issuing a walk.
Bardi finished a homer shy of the cycle. He ended up 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Spallin's three-run double was the Privateers' only other extra-base hit. Each of the first eight hitters in the Maritime lineup scored a run.
For St. Joseph's LI, Joya went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Maggio was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Hackal reached base four times. He finished 2-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and an RBI. Thatcher also had two hits for the Golden Eagles.
Starting pitcher Riley Morris recorded just one out. He was charged with seven runs (four earned) on four hits and walked one. After 2.2 scoreless innings from Chris Perri, Tyler Cooney followed with five no-hit innings. He struck out six and walked one. Dante Morabito (3-3), meanwhile, earned the win. He allowed one run on two hits and tallied three strikeouts.
The Privateers' doubleheader against Farmingdale (19-9, 12-2 Skyline), which was postponed on Saturday because of weather, has been rescheduled for Tuesday. The first game at Reinhart Baseball Field will get underway at 3:30 p.m., while the second contest starts at approximately 7 p.m.
