Barbieri Earns 200th Career Victory As Maritime Sweeps Union

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College baseball team rode solid pitching to a doubleheader sweep of Union on Sunday afternoon.  After taking the opener by a 6-2 count, the Privateers (3-6) earned a 4-1 triumph over the Garnet Chargers (5-4) in the second game at Reinhart Baseball Field.  With the two victories, Charlie Barbieri now has 200 wins as Maritime's head coach.

Union took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of Game 1 before the Privateers tied the score in the bottom of the third.  Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) started the inning with a walk, then came across on Michael Frazzetta's (Howard Beach, NY) double to center.  The Garnet Chargers went back in front with a run in the fourth, but Maritime responded with a two-spot in its half of the inning.  After the Privateers loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, Weber smacked a two-run double to right that made it 3-2.

Maritime added three insurance tallies—all with two out—in the bottom of the sixth.  David Granucci (Medford, NY) and Weber both walked to bring up Bardi, who reached on an infield single.  Frazzetta and Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) drew back-to-back bases loaded walks before Bardi scored on a wild pitch to increase the Privateers' advantage to 6-2.  Colin McKeon (Mullica Hill, NJ) and Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) then combined to shut Union down in the top of the seventh to finish off the victory.

Matt Demme (Carmel, NY) (1-1) got the start on the mound and earned the win.  He allowed two runs on six hits, struck out six and walked two in five innings.  McKeon retired all four batters he faced, including a pair of strikeouts, while Sorge recorded one strikeout in 0.2 innings.  Weber led the way offensively, going 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, two runs scored and two RBIs.  Frazzetta finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and Martinson was also credited with an RBI.

Starting pitcher Jack Klein (0-1) lasted 3.2 innings for the Garnet Chargers.  He surrendered three runs on four hits, recorded four strikeouts and walked three.  Will Nardella gave up three runs on a hit and four walks over two innings before Garrick Goldin struck out the only batter he faced.  Kyle Zaslaw's double was Union's only extra-base hit, while Dylan Swarts and Dan Sheeran each drove in a run.

In Game 2, Maritime struck for three runs in the bottom of the second.  John Spallin (Holmdel, NJ) drew a walk to start the inning, then scored on Ian Wilson's (Bayonne, NJ) double to the wall in right center.  Weber followed with an RBI single, and he eventually came across on a wild pitch.  After the Garnet Chargers picked up an unearned run in the top of the third, the Privateers started the bottom half of the inning with three consecutive singles.  Granucci's infield hit knocked in Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) and gave Maritime a 4-1 advantage.

That was all the offense Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) needed.  He threw five brilliant innings before being relieved by Haydn Strycharz (Pittstown, NJ).  Union loaded the bases against Strycharz in the sixth, but he got out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly ball to right.  It was still a 4-1 game when Caleb Miller tripled off Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) leading off the top of the ninth.  However, Mylan used two strikeouts and a popup to end the threat and close out the victory.

Heiderstadt (2-0) picked up his second win in five days after allowing just an unearned run and two hits.  He struck out three and walked three.  Strycharz gave up two hits while recording three hits and issuing one walk over 1.2 scoreless innings.  Mylan pitched the final 2.1 innings and was credited with his first career save.  He surrendered one hit and one walk and notched three strikeouts.

Offensively, Granucci led the way with three hits—all singles.  He also drove in a run and scored once.  Spallin had two hits and a run scored, and Weber finished 1-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.  Frazzetta, meanwhile, reached base all five times on four walks and a hit by pitch.

For the Garnet Chargers, Aidan McGee (0-1) made the start and took the loss.  He was charged with four runs on six hits and four walks over three innings.  Union's bullpen held the Privateers to three hits over five innings of relief.  The Garnet Chargers tallied just five hits, with Miller scoring his team's only run.

After a week off, Maritime concludes its seven-game homestand by welcoming Baruch (1-7) to Reinhart Baseball Field for a doubleheader next Sunday at 12 p.m.
