Charlie Barbieri

2016, 2017 Skyline Coach of the Year
2017 ECAC Metro Coach of the Year
2017 Axcess Baseball Coach of the Year

Charlie Barbieri has been the head coach of the Maritime baseball team since 2015.  The two-time Skyline Conference Coach of the Year (2016, 2017) and 2017 ECAC Metro Coach of the Year has led the Privateers to the Skyline Tournament each season (with the exception of 2020, when it was cancelled), and Maritime qualified for its first-ever NCAA Tournament by winning the conference title in 2017.

After going 12-18 in Barbieri’s first year, the Privateers have won at least 20 games in every non-COVID-impacted season since.  In 2023, Maritime tallied a program-record 29 victories and made it to the final round of the Skyline Tournament for the first time since its 2017 championship run.  Barbieri earned his 100th win as the Privateers’ head coach during the 2019 season and posted his 150th win at Maritime in 2023.

Three Privateers earned First Team All-Skyline honors in 2015, Barbieri’s first season at the helm, as Maritime finished fourth in the regular season standings to qualify for the Skyline Tournament.  In 2016, the Privateers posted a then-school-record 22 wins, including 11 conference victories.  Barbieri was named Skyline Coach of the Year and six Maritime players landed on the All-Skyline First Team after the team set program records (since broken) for runs (229), RBIs (192), triples (10) and home runs (22).

The 2017 season was the most successful in program history.  Maritime won 26 games and went 15-3 in Skyline play during the regular season.  The Privateers entered the Skyline Tournament as the No. 2 seed and earned a 15-inning, 8-7 victory over Merchant Marine in their opening game.  Maritime then moved into the championship round with a 21-8 triumph against top-seeded St. Joseph’s LI before topping Mount St. Mary, 14-2, to capture its first-ever Skyline title and NCAA Tournament berth.

Maritime hit .328 as a team that season and scored 316 runs.  The Privateers crushed 37 home runs and collected 426 hits.  Maritime’s pitchers, meanwhile, combined for 256 strikeouts.  Barbieri received his second straight Skyline Coach of the Year award, and he was honored as both the ECAC Metro Region Coach of the Year and Axcess Baseball Coach of the Year, as well.  Maritime also placed six players on the All-Skyline team, led by ABCA Second Team All-America selection Brian McLaughlin.

In 2018, the Maritime pitching staff set program records for lowest ERA (3.70), lowest opponent batting average (.270) and most saves (7), as seven Privateers received all-conference accolades.  Maritime then earned three All-Skyline selections during a 2019 season that was highlighted by a 10-game winning streak from March 17-31.  The Privateers were the No. 4 seed in the Skyline Tournament and posted a 10-9 walk-off victory over St. Joseph’s LI in the first round at Reinhart Baseball Field.

Both the 2020 and 2021 seasons were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the 2020 campaign ending after just seven games and the Privateers playing an abbreviated conference-only slate in 2021.  In 2022, Maritime played its first full schedule in three seasons and won 20 games for the fifth time in Barbieri’s tenure.  Freddy Forgione and Niko Concha were named First Team All-Skyline, in addition to both taking home multiple all-region honors, and Frank Santeramo was chosen as the Skyline Rookie of the Year.

During a record-setting 2023 campaign, the Privateers established new team marks for runs (366), hits (448), home runs (53), doubles (114) and RBIs (339).  Maritime’s pitchers also broke the program record with 291 total strikeouts, as the Privateers won a school-record 29 games and made their first appearance in the championship round of the Skyline Tournament since their 2017 title run.  Matt Milone was named Skyline Co-Player of the Year after setting school records for home runs (15), doubles (17), triples (4) and RBIs (55).  He was one of five Privateers to receive All-Skyline honors, while Milone and Forgione each earned all-region nods.

Overall, Barbieri has produced 27 all-conference selections during his tenure at Maritime.  His players have also received a combined 11 all-region accolades from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), D3baseball.com and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC).  Barbieri has coached one All-American in McLaughlin.

He came to Maritime with over a decade of coaching experience at several different levels.  From 2008-14, Barbieri was the head coach at Midwood High School in Brooklyn.  He led the team to wins over nationally-ranked programs three years in a row, and the Hornets captured the conference championship in 2014.  While at Midwood, Barbieri was honored as the 2010 PSAL Brooklyn Coach of the Year.

Additionally, Barbieri has coached several high-level summer and fall league teams.  He guided the Long Island Storm to the Long Island Collegiate Baseball League title in 2016, and in 2018, Barbieri’s Westhampton Aviators reached the semifinals of the Hamptons League.  In 2019, he led the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League to 25 wins, their most in four years, and a berth in the NECBL playoffs for the first time since 2015.  That summer, the Mountaineers were ranked as high as No. 6 in the country by Summer Baseball Report and 19th by the Collegiate Summer Baseball Register.

From 2011-13, he worked with scout teams for the Florida/Miami Marlins organization.  During the summer of 2012, Barbieri led the Marlins’ 18U Scout Team to the World Scout League National Championship and a Perfect Game national ranking as high as No. 3.  He also has previous experience with the Long Island Storm Elite 17U/18U teams and was an associate scout for the Toronto Blue Jays during the summer of 2013.

Throughout the course of his coaching career, Barbieri has seen numerous players sign with or be drafted by Major League organizations, including three first-round picks.  Paul Blackburn was taken in the first round by the Chicago Cubs in 2012, while the New York Mets selected Dominic Smith a year later.  Blackburn and Smith both went on to become established Major League players.  The most recent first-round pick coached by Barbieri is Delvin Perez, who was chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016.

Other players who Barbieri has coached that reached the Major Leagues include Patrick Sandoval, Ryan Kriedler, James Norwood, Seth Martinez, Jose Cuas and Andrew Velasquez.

Barbieri played two years of varsity baseball at C.W. Post University (now part of Long Island University) before transferring to Adelphi University.  He graduated from Adelphi in 2001 with a degree in physical education.  Barbieri received a Master’s in health education from Adelphi in 2007.
