Privateers Roll to 17-5 Win Over John Jay

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Tuesday night, the Maritime College baseball team welcomed John Jay to Reinhart Baseball Field.  Behind 11 strikeouts from Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) and two home runs by David Granucci (Medford, NY), the Privateers (1-6) earned their first victory of the season, 17-5 over the Bloodhounds (2-1).

After giving up two runs in the top of the first, Heiderstadt struck out the side in the second—all looking.  He also had three strikeouts in the third, then retired the leadoff hitter in the fourth on strikes, giving him eight consecutive K's going back to the first inning.  Nine of the first 10 outs Heiderstadt recorded were via strikeout.  His 11 strikeouts were the fourth-highest single-game total in program history and the most by a Privateers pitcher since 2022.  Heiderstadt (1-0) went five innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a pair of walks.

The Maritime offense, meanwhile, put up a five-spot in the bottom of the second.  After the first three Privateers all reached, John Carollo (Staten Island, NY) roped a double to left that cleared the bases and put Maritime in front, 3-2.  Two batters later, Granucci crushed his first career long ball, a two-run shot to right center that increased the Privateers' lead to 5-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Maritime erupted for eight more runs.  Granucci started the inning with a single, then came across on Michael Frazzetta's (Howard Beach, NY) two-run double.  After an RBI single by Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY), Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  That brought up Granucci again, and he belted a grand slam to right that made it 13-2.  The Privateers then added an unearned tally in the fifth.

John Jay got one in the top of the sixth, but Maritime took advantage of some poor defense to plate three more runs in the eighth.  Ryan Wood's (Huntington Station, NY) popup dropped for a bloop RBI single, then two scored on an error.  The Bloodhounds plated a pair in the top of the ninth before Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) shut the door on the Privateers' 17-5 win.

All 18 of Maritime's position players got into the game, and 11 Privateers either scored or drove in a run.  Granucci finished 3-for-4 with two homers, three runs scored and six RBIs.  Carollo was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Frazzetta also knocked in two, and Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) had two hits, while Weber and John Spallin (Holmdel, NJ) each crossed the plate twice.

For John Jay, Quentin Bowman was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, and Sebastian Sanchez recorded three RBIs.  Mark Piri drove in a pair, while Ryan Cherichella scored twice.  Alvy Grullon (1-1) got the start on the mound for the Bloodhounds and took the loss.  He surrendered seven runs on five hits, struck out three and walked three in three innings.

Maritime returns to action on Sunday with a doubleheader against Union (3-2).  The first game of the twinbill gets underway at 12 p.m.
