DAVENPORT, FL – After opening the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a loss to No. 16 Wisconsin-La Crosse on Wednesday night, the Maritime College baseball team had a quick turnaround before taking on Ripon at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning. That proved to be no issue for the Privateers, as
Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmigdale, NY) pitched 6.2 strong innings to lead Maritime (6-7) to its first victory of the trip, 4-2 over the Red Hawks (3-8) at Northeast Regional Park.
The Privateers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
John Carollo (Staten Island, NY) drew a leadoff walk and
John Spallin (Holmdel, NJ) followed with an RBI triple. Spallin then came across when
Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) reached on an error. Ripon cut the margin to 2-1 with a tally in the third, but Maritime regained a two-run advantage in the sixth, when Carollo knocked in
Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY).
In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Hawks had the tying run on third and two out after Alex Pankratz's RBI single.
Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) was called upon to relieve Heiderstadt, but he walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. He retired Chase Hanselman on a fly ball to right, though, preserving the 3-2 lead.
Maritime added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. After Spallin walked, pinch runner
Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) stole second and moved to third on
Randy Ventura's (Syosset, NY) infield single. Leipold was up next, and he lifted a sacrifice fly to left that made it 4-2. Sorge then set Ripon down in order in the bottom of the ninth to finish off the victory.
Heiderstadt (4-0) allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out six and walked two. Sorge earned the save after giving up just a walk in 2.1 innings. Offensively, the Privateers had eight hits. Bardi was 2-for-5 with a run scored, while
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
For the Red Hawks, Pankratz was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Blaine Whalen (1-2) tossed eight solid innings on the mound. He yielded three runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Matthew Stuczynski pitched the ninth, surrendering one run, one hit and one walk.
On Friday, Maritime is scheduled to play a doubleheader against Lawrence (2-4). The first game of the twinbill will get underway at 3:30 p.m.
