DAVENPORT, FL – The Maritime College baseball team continued its stay at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a doubleheader against Lawrence on Friday. After dropping the opener by a 12-0 count, the Privateers (7-8) rallied to post a 13-5 victory over the Vikings (3-5) in Game 2 at Northeast Regional Park.
Lawrence starter Elden Santana pitched a two-hit shutout in Game 1. The only two hits he allowed were a
Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) single in the first and an
Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) double leading off the third. Weber would prove to be Maritime's last baserunner, as Santana (2-0) retired the final 15 Privateers in order. He ended up with nine strikeouts and two walks in the complete game victory.
Santana got all the offense he needed on CJ Filipek's two-run double in the first. The Vikings added five runs in the second, then made it 10-0 with a three-spot in the top of the third. Lawrence plated two in the sixth to finish off the scoring in the 12-0 victory.
Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) (0-1) got the start on the mound for Maritime and took the loss. He surrendered 10 runs (seven earned) on six hits, struck out three and walked three.
Haydn Strycharz (Pittstown, NJ) gave up two hits and two walks over 1.2 innings, while
Kayleb Wray (Wilmington, NC) followed with a scoreless inning.
Nick Capone (Deer Park, NY) was charged with two runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout over two innings of work.
Maritime was the visiting team in Game 2, and the Privateers immediately struck for five runs in the top of the first. After singles by Weber and
Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY),
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) walked to load the bases.
John Spallin (Holmdel, NJ) then ripped an RBI single before another run scored when
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) beat out a double play ball.
Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) ripped an RBI double and
Chris Picarella (Levittown, NY) singled in a run, then Leipold came across on a throwing error to make it 5-0.
After Lawrence got three back in their half of the first, the Vikings pulled within 5-4 on Taylor Freeman's RBI single in the second. However, the Privateers took advantage of a Lawrence miscue to break it open in the top of the third. Maritime had two on and two out when
Blake Gnepper (Ottawa Hills, OH) reached on an error. Weber was up next, and he crushed a grand slam to left that increased the Privateers' lead to 9-4.
Each team added a run in the sixth. Maritime then plated three in the top of the seventh. Bardi tripled with one out, and Frazzetta followed with a sacrifice fly to left. After Martinson walked,
Joey Goodman (Merrick, NY) and Ventura both singled. Goodman eventually came around on the back end of a double steal. In the bottom of the seventh,
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) worked around an error and a single to finish off the 13-5 win.
As a team, the Privateers pounded out 15 hits in Game 2. Weber was 4-for-5 with a grand slam, two runs scored and four RBIs, while Bardi went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Leipold also ended up 3-for-5. He had a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Martinson also scored twice, and Goodman finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored off the bench.
Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) (2-3) made his first start of the season on the mound and lasted five innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits, struck out seven and walked two. Kellner was charged with one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout over the final two innings.
Eight different Vikings had at least one hit. Tate Hartlaub recorded two hits and two runs, while Edan Perez and Shane Santaga each posted a pair of hits, as well. Filipek, meanwhile, went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Starting pitcher Nick Katz (0-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs (four earned) and four hits in 2.1 innings. He struck out two and walked one.
On Saturday, Maritime concludes the trip by taking on No. 19 Rutgers-Camden (11-5) at 10:30 a.m. It will be the Privateers' third game against a ranked opponent this season, including their second during the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
