THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College baseball team played its first home doubleheader of the season on Saturday. After New Paltz took the first game by a 10-6 count, the second contest went into extra innings, with the Hawks (3-2) earning a 7-6 victory to complete the sweep of the Privateers (0-6) at Reinhart Baseball Field.
Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY) struck out the side in the first inning of Game 1 and retired the first six New Paltz hitters he faced before the Hawks broke through with a run in the top of the third. New Paltz added another in the top of the sixth, but Maritime responded with a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning. The Privateers had five consecutive hits during the rally, capped by
John Carollo's (Staten Island, NY) pinch-hit single that gave Maritime the lead. An error on the play resulted in another run, giving the Privateers a 4-2 advantage.
It remained that way until the top of the eighth, when the Hawks scored twice to tie the game. New Paltz then erupted for six runs in the ninth to open up a 10-4 cushion.
Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY),
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) and
John Spallin (Holmdel, NJ) all singled in the bottom of the ninth, and
Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) followed with a sacrifice fly that brought Maritime within 10-6. That would prove to be the final score, though, as Dylan Hayes got
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) to pop up for the final out.
As a team, the Privateers belted 14 hits in the contest. Weber was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, while Spallin finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Frazzetta, Carollo and
Chris Picarella (Levittown, NY) each added two hits, and Martinson went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Santeramo lasted six innings on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out five and walking one.
Colin McKeon (Mullica Hill, NJ) issued a walk and recorded a strikeout in a scoreless seventh before giving way to
Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) (0-3) who took the loss after yielding six runs (five earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 1.1 innings.
For New Paltz, Matt Sarni went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Joe Richetti, Ryan Muskopf and Fabian Apicella also crossed the plate twice, while Michael Ascanio ended up 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Dillon Ristano added two singles for the Hawks. Starting pitcher Michael Weed surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out five over 5.1 innings. After Ryan Knieriemen held the Privateers to four hits in 2.1 innings of relief, Hayes (1-0) pitched the final 1.1 innings and was credited with the win. He gave up two runs on three hits and walked two.
In Game 2, Bardi gave Maritime an early 1-0 with an RBI double in the bottom of the first. New Paltz responded with a five-spot in the top of the second, though, with Ryan Mackle belting a three-run homer to start the rally before Tommy Kreider doubled in a run and Ascanio followed with an RBI single. The Privateers scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the second, however, as Frazzetta doubled to left with the bases loaded, cutting his team's deficit to 4-3.
After Maritime tied the game on Ventura's RBI single in the bottom of the third, both teams picked up a run in the fourth. And it would stay that way for the next four innings.
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) and
Jared Kay (Lewes, DE) combined to retire nine Hawks in a row at one point during that stretch, while New Paltz pitching held the Privateers without a hit between Carollo's leadoff single in the fifth and
Joey Goodman's (Merrick, NY) single leading off the ninth.
New Paltz broke the deadlock in the top of the ninth. Ascanio led off the inning with a triple down the left field line, then, after Kay got Ristano on a foul popup, Wallace Kirkpatrick lifted a sacrifice fly to center that put the Hawks in front, 7-6. Maritime put the tying run on second in the bottom of the ninth when Goodman singled and advanced on Martinson's groundout. However, Spallin's line drive to second was snagged by Kreider, and he stepped on the bag to complete the double play and give New Paltz a 7-6, extra-inning win.
Six different Privateers had hits in Game 2, with Ventura going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Frazzetta drove in three runs and
Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) scored twice. He and Ventura each swiped two bases. Starting pitcher
Matt Demme (Carmel, NY) gave up six runs on seven hits, struck out eight and walked two over four innings. Kellner tossed three shutout innings, allowing two hits and recording one strikeout. Kay (0-1) took the loss after yielding one run on three hits with a strikeout in two innings of work.
Ascanio finished a home run shy of the cycle for the Hawks, while Mackle was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs on his homer. Garrett Grothwohl and Apicella added two hits apiece. Sari made the start on the mound in Game 2 and went three innings. He surrendered five runs on five hits, struck out three and walked two. Johnny McHugh (1-0) faced the minimum nine batters over the final three innings and earned the win.
Maritime was originally scheduled to face CCNY on Sunday, but that doubleheader has been cancelled because of the forecasted low temperatures. The Privateers' next contest will now be a 6 p.m. matchup with John Jay (2-0) at Reinhart Baseball Field on Tuesday.
