Privateers Held Off By Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, NJ – After falling behind 8-0, the Maritime College baseball team rallied for nine consecutive runs to take the lead at Montclair State on Wednesday.  However, the Red Hawks (4-0) scored two in the sixth and two more in the eighth to notch a 12-9 victory over the Privateers (0-4) at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Montclair State scored eight times in the bottom of the second before Maritime started its comeback effort with a three-spot in the top of the third.  Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) ripped a two-run double, then Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) came across on an error to make it 8-3.

The Privateers added three more in the top of the fourth.  Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) led off the inning with a single up the middle and scored on Chris Picarella's (Levittown, NY) double.  Frazzetta then brought Maritime within 8-6 with a two-run single to left.  After picking up another run in the fifth, the Privateers went in front with two in the top of the sixth.  Frazzetta and Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) ripped back-to-back doubles before Martinson scored the go-ahead tally when Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) reached on an error.

However, the Red Hawks posted a two-spot of their own in the bottom of the sixth.  Montclair State loaded the bases before Brody Diers put the Red Hawks back in front with a pinch-hit single up the middle.  After Montclair State added two insurance runs in the eighth, Patrick Teehan struck out the side in the ninth to close out the Red Hawks' 12-9 win.

Frazzetta went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Weber ended up 2-for-5 with a run scored.  Bardi drove in two runs with his double, while Ventura scored twice.  Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) made the start on the mound and lasted two innings.  He surrendered eight runs (five earned) on five hits and one walk.  Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) (0-2) allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout in 2.1 innings and took the loss.

Jared Levis had three of Montclair State's 15 hits and drove in a pair.  Marcus Johnson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Chase Fischer finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.  Zach Stearns scored twice for the Red Hawks.  Starting pitcher Colin Dowlen gave up six unearned runs, struck out four and walked three over four innings.  Evan Wood (1-0) earned the win, while Teehan recorded his third save of the season.

On Saturday, Maritime begins its home schedule with an 11 a.m. doubleheader against New Paltz (0-2).  It will mark the start of an eight-game homestand for the Privateers.
