BALTIMORE – The Maritime College baseball team wrapped up the Baltimore Invitational with two games on Sunday. After dropping a 12-8 decision to St. John Fisher (2-1), the Privateers (0-3) fell to sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins (3-0) by a 10-2 count at Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium.
In Maritime's matchup with St. John Fisher, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. After St. John Fisher added another tally in the second, the Privateers cut their deficit in half with two in the fourth.
Owen Weber (Kings Park, NY) lifted a sacrifice fly before
John Spallin (Holmdel, NJ) scored when
John Carollo (Staten Island, NY) reached on an error.
St. John Fisher responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-2, but Maritime tied the game with five runs in the top of the fifth.
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) and Weber each ripped an RBI single before three unearned tallies came across on an error. After each team picked up a single run, the Cardinals broke the deadlock with four in the eighth. The big blow in the inning was Jimmy McCardle's two-RBI double to left. St. John Fisher's Michael Bowler then retired the Privateers in the ninth to finish off the 12-8 victory.
As a team, Maritime had 10 hits in the game, with
Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) roping a pair of doubles. Weber was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Spallin finished 2-for-4 with three runs.
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) also recorded two hits and
Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) scored twice.
Gavin McIntyre (Princess Anne, MD) got the start on the mound and lasted 1.1 innings. He gave up four runs on two hits, walked two and struck out one.
Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) tossed 3.2 innings of relief, yielding four runs on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) (0-1) took the loss after surrendering four runs (two earned) on four hits over three innings of work. He was credited with four strikeouts and issued two walks.
For the Cardinals, McCardle went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Ryan Vanderlip finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Jack Griffin and Jake Crantz added two RBIs apiece, and Mario Cubello crossed the plate twice. Starting pitcher Robert Leach allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out four over four innings. Conner Walker (1-0) earned the win after pitching the eighth and notching three strikeouts with a walk.
Against No. 6 Johns Hopkins, the Privateers again faced an early deficit. A two-run homer by Jacob Harris capped a four-spot in the bottom of the first for the Blue Jays. Johns Hopkins then made it 10-0 with six runs in the third.
After being one-hit thru five innings, Maritime broke through with two runs in the sixth.
Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) walked and Frazzetta singled before Martinson singled home Bardi. Spallin followed with an RBI groundout that made it 10-2. The Privateers would only have one other baserunner, however, when
Alex Guzman (Holliswood, NY) drew a two-out walk in the ninth.
Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY) (0-1) took the loss after surrendering 10 runs on 10 hits in 2.2 innings. He struck out three and walked one.
Jared Kay (Lewes, DE),
Colin McKeon (Mullica Hill, NJ) and
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) combined to toss 5.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits between them.
Johns Hopkins tallied 13 hits as a team, with Dillon Souvignier going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Harris was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Jimmy Stevens also had two hits and two RBIs. Shawn Steurer and Alex Shane both scored twice for the Blue Jays.
Quinn Rovner started on the mound and pitched four no-hit innings. He was credited with four strikeouts and issued one walk. Five different relievers each threw an inning, with Grant Meert (1-0) receiving the win after striking out two in a perfect eighth.
On Wednesday, Maritime heads to Montclair State (2-0) for a 2 p.m. contest. The game was originally scheduled for Feb. 18, but was postponed due to poor field conditions.
