THROGGS NECK, NY – Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) became the newest member of the Maritime College men's basketball program's 1000-point club on Wednesday night. He reached the milestone with a three-pointer at the 10:27 mark of the second half in the Privateers' (14-10, 10-5 Skyline) 81-72 victory over St. Joseph's Brooklyn (5-19, 2-13 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium. Noble ended up with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win.
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) finished with 34 points, the most by a Maritime player since 2013 and the third-highest single-game total in program history. He added 11 points for his fourth double-double of the season. His was the first 30-point double-double for a Privateer since Giovanni Hurley's 35-point, 12-rebound, 10-steal triple-double against NYU on Dec. 30, 2010.
Devaney scored Maritime's first eight points and 10 of the first 14, as the Privateers opened up a 14-8 advantage. The Bears rattled off seven straight points to take a 15-14 lead before
Chris Zaveckas (Merrick, NY) immediately countered with a trey on the other end. St. Joseph's Brooklyn countered with a 12-3 run, though, to build a 27-20 cushion with 7:24 left in the first half.
It was still a seven-point game when
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) sank a pair of free throws to start a 7-0 Maritime rally that leveled the score at 34-34 with 3:09 remaining until halftime. After the teams traded buckets, the Privateers regained the lead, 40-38, on
Jake Murphy's (Rockville Centre, NY) layup at the 1:13 mark. Murphy then sank a trey just before the halftime buzzer sounded to increase Maritime's advantage to 43-38 at the break. He and Devaney had a combined 30 first-half points (15 apiece).
The Privateers extended their cushion to 46-38 early in the second half before the Bears rallied within three, 51-48. However, a Devaney layup with 12:56 left sparked a 15-5 run that gave Maritime its largest lead of the night, 66-53, with 7:29 remaining. St. Joseph's Brooklyn scored the next seven points to cut the margin to six, 66-60, and eventually trimmed its deficit to five, 76-71, but would get no closer. The Privateers wrapped up an 81-72 triumph to end their five-game skid.
Murphy recorded 19 points, as he, Devaney and Noble combined for 68 of Maritime's 81 points. Block posted eight rebounds and five assists, while
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) handed out three assists. As a team, the Privateers shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the floor, 33.3 percent (8-of-24) from long range, and 68 percent (17-of-25) at the free throw line.
For the Bears, Colin Mills led the way with 26 points. Timothy Richardson contributed 13 points, while Adam Jasraj had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Williams notched nine points and five assists, and Joshua Gordon secured seven boards to go along with three blocks. Overall, St. Joseph's Brooklyn was 21-for-59 (35.6 percent) from the field, 10-for-33 (30.3 percent) from downtown, and 20-for-24 (83.3 percent) at the charity stripe.
Maritime concludes the regular season by hosting Old Westbury (10-13, 5-10 Skyline) at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Privateers, who beat the Panthers 68-65 on Jan. 15, will clinch the No. 4 seed and a home game in the quarterfinals of the Skyline Tournament with a victory.
