Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Maritime Drops Exhibition Affair at Army

WEST POINT, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team led by as many as five points in the first half of its exhibition matchup at Army on Monday night.  The Black Knights (1-0) eventually pulled in front and built a nine-point halftime edge en route to a 73-49 victory over the Privateers at Christl Arena.

This marked the third straight season in which Maritime traveled to West Point for an exhibition contest.  It was the first time that the game opened the Privateers' schedule, however.

After Army opened up a 5-2 advantage, Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) hit a trey to start an 8-0 Maritime run that put the Privateers in front 10-5.  A Sean Kivlan (Floral Park, NY) free throw made it 11-6 with 13:04 left in the first half before the Black Knights used an 8-3 spurt to level the score at 14-14.  Maritime responded, though, regaining a four-point edge, 20-16, on a Jaylen Jean-Louis (Freeport, NY) layup at the 7:15 mark of the first half.  Army ended the half on a 20-7 rally, however, to take a nine-point advantage, 36-27, into the locker room.

That cushion increased to 16 points at 47-31 before the Privateers went on an 8-2 run to get back within 10.  However, after an Evan Block (Seaford, NY) three-pointer cut Maritime's deficit to 49-39 with 12:36 left, the Black Knights countered with an 11-0 rally to push the margin to 21 points, 60-39.  The Privateers pulled within 15 at 60-45 when Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) sank a layup and free throw with 4:56 to go, but Army ended the game on a 13-4 spurt to finish off a 73-49 win.

Devaney led Maritime with 18 points, while Block pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.  Anderson contributed seven points, and Matthew O'Sullivan (Rockaway Beach, NY) had three steals off the bench.  As a team, the Privateers shot 26.5 percent (13-of-49) from the floor, 25 percent (5-of-20) from downtown, and 64.3 percent (18-of-28) at the free throw line.

For the Black Knights, Kevin McCarthy tallied 18 points to go along with three steals.  Jackson Furman finished with 17 points and Jacen Holloway notched 13 points.  Tate Laczkowski grabbed nine rebounds for Army, which had a 45-40 edge on the glass.  The Black Knights were 29-of-74 (39.2 percent) from the field, 11-of-41 (26.8 percent) from long range, and 4-of-8 (50 percent) at the charity stripe.

Maritime begins the regular season by visiting Ramapo at 4 p.m. on Saturday.  The only previous meeting between the Privateers and Roadrunners was during the 2002-03 season.
