THROGGS NECK, NY – After a tight first half that featured six lead changes, the Maritime College men's basketball team held a one-point halftime lead against John Jay on Saturday. The Privateers (1-2) then used a 9-0 run early in the second half to go ahead for good in an 85-74 triumph over the Bloodhounds (0-3) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
The lead changed hands four times in the first two minutes before a
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) trey started an 11-3 Maritime run that put the Privateers in front, 15-8. Maritime extended that advantage to 11 points at 38-27 with 5:13 left until halftime, but John Jay responded with a 13-0 rally, going back ahead, 40-38, on Ronnie McIntyre's three-pointer at the 2:08 mark.
Sean Kivlan (Floral Park, NY) tied it with a layup on the Privateers' next possession, and
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) sank a free throw to give Maritime a 41-40 edge at the break.
A McIntyre layup to open the second half put the Bloodhounds ahead 42-41, but the Privateers immediately regained the lead when Kivlan drained a three on the other end. That trey sparked a 19-5 spurt over the next four minutes, as Maritime opened up its biggest cushion of the game, 60-47. After John Jay got back within six at 70-64,
Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) sank a three-pointer to start a 7-2 run that brought the margin back to 11 points, 77-66. The Privateers made eight straight foul shots down the stretch to close out the 85-74 victory.
Devaney finished with 24 points on 9-for-11 shooting. He added five rebounds. Kivlan
notched 15 points and eight boards in his first collegiate start, while Williams contributed 15 points and eight assists. Anderson
tallied 13 points, and
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) had six assists to go along with six rebounds. As a team, Maritime shot 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field, 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from three-point range, and 73.1 percent (19-of-26) at the free throw line.
For the Bloodhounds, Keyshawn Miller recorded a double-double with 26 points and 15 rebounds. He also posted four assists and five steals. McIntyre chipped in 21 points, while Adrian Kopec reached double-figures, as well, with 10 points. Amare Jordan grabbed eight rebounds for John Jay, which held a 41-36 advantage on the glass. The Bloodhounds shot a combined 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the floor, but were just 10-for-31 (32.3 percent) from downtown and 18-of-31 (58.1 percent) at the charity stripe.
On Thursday, the Privateers on their third straight CUNY Athletic Conference opponent, when they visit Hunter (0-3) at 6 p.m.
