THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's swimming & diving team's dual meet with William Paterson on Tuesday night came down to the final event—the 200 yard freestyle relay. By placing second and third in the relay, the Privateers secured a 131-126 win over the Pioneers at the Riesenberg Aquatics Center. On the women's side, William Paterson earned a 179-61 victory.
Maritime held a 125-115 lead heading into the final relay. The Pioneers picked up 11 points by winning the event, but the Privateers' quartet of
Matt Klimek (Malverne, NY),
Liam MacManus (Islip, NY),
Victor Pineda (Bronx, NY) and
Michael Saharov (Staten Island, NY) finished second in 1:36.49 to secure six points. Maritime's "B" relay of
Alex Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY),
Ryan Colombo (Cortland Manor, NY),
Brendan Twomey and
Johnny Walz (Staten Island, NY) held off William Paterson's "B" squad to place third in 1:41.22, securing two points and the victory.
Rowan Hayes (Floral Park, NY) contributed three first-place finishes in the 100 yard breaststroke (58.76), 200 yard breaststroke (2:15.51) and 200 yard individual medley (2:04.00). He also teamed with Pineda, Klimek and
Alex Osypenko (Oyster Bay, NY) to post a winning time of 1:45.42 in the 200 yard medley relay. Osypenko added a victory in the 100 yard butterfly (58.27) and took second behind Hayes in the 200 individual medley (2:15.76). MacManus, meanwhile, took first in the 200 yard freestyle with a 2:04.80 clocking.
Oceana Elefante (Sayville, NY) recorded the only two event wins for the Privateer women. She recorded a time of 27.67 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle and had a 3:03.79 clocking in the 200 breaststroke. Elefante was also second in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.51), and she joined with
Carolina Hardy (Long Beach, NY),
Kristen Carroll (New York, NY) and
Renee Kelly (Queens, NY) to grab second place in the 200 freestyle relay (2:06.71). Individually, Carroll finished second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:18.94).
On Friday, Maritime travels to Merchant Marine for a 6 p.m. meet. In addition to the host Mariners, the Privateers will take on Skyline Conference rivals Mount St. Mary and St. Joseph's LI.
