Morrill’s Early Goal Holds Up In 1-0 Win

THROGGS NECK, NY – Ava Morrill (New Windsor, NY) scored on a direct free kick in the fifth minute of the Maritime College women's soccer team's matchup against Lehman on Tuesday.  That goal would prove to be the difference, as the Privateers (4-5-0) wrapped up non-conference play with a 1-0 triumph over the Lightning (0-7-0) at Reinhart Field.

Maritime earned the early free kick from 45 yards out, and Morrill blasted it on net.  The shot went into the top right corner, just over the keeper's fingertips and just under the crossbar to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead.  It was her first goal of the year and eighth career tally.

Goalkeeper Katelyn Rice kept the game within reach for Lehman.  Maritime outshot the Lightning 35-13, including a 26-5 margin in the second half, but Rice (0-7-0) made 11 saves to keep the Privateers off the board after Morrill's early score.  Maritime goalkeeper Estela Quintero (Oceanside, NY) was just as stingy as her counterpart, recording six saves and notching her third clean sheet of the season.

The Privateers (2-4-0 Skyline) resume their Skyline Conference slate on Saturday with a 3 p.m. contest at Sarah Lawrence (3-8-1, 2-3-0 Skyline).  Maritime's next three games are all on the road.
