THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College women's soccer team played Sarah Lawrence even for the first 44 minutes on Friday night. However, the Gryphons (5-3-1, 2-0-1 Skyline) scored with 20 seconds left until halftime, then tallied five goals in the second half to notch a 7-1 victory over the Privateers (4-2-0, 1-2-0 Skyline) at Reinhart Field.
Sarah Lawrence took a 1-0 lead on Chloe Barker's goal in the 13
th minute before Maritime found the equalizer 14 minutes later. After the Privateers earned a free kick just outside the box,
Ava Morrill (New Windsor, NY) stepped up and fed
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY). Her header bounced off the post and in, leveling the score at 1-1. It remained that way until Lily Matalus found the back of the net in the waning seconds of the first half.
Barker's second goal of the game barely two minutes into the second half made it 3-1 in favor of Sarah Lawrence. The Gryphons scored two more in the next five minutes to extend their advantage to 5-1. The final margin was 7-1, as Sarah Lawrence outshot Maritime 41-10, including an 18-3 edge in shots on goal.
Ford's tally was her seventh of the year. Morrill, meanwhile, was credited with her team-leading third assist.
Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) (4-2-0), who made 13 saves against St. Joseph's LI on Tuesday, had her second straight double-digit save effort. She stopped 11 Sarah Lawrence shots.
Six different Gryphons scored, with Barker finding the back of the net twice. Hannah Chaffin added a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Arwen Browne (3-0-0) recorded a pair of saves.
Up next for the Privateers is a 4:30 p.m. visit to Old Westbury (3-3-1, 1-0-0 Skyline) on Wednesday. It will be Maritime's only road contest in a five-game span.
