Maritime Drops Skyline Contest to St. Joseph’s LI

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College women's soccer team began a span where it plays four out of five at home by welcoming St. Joseph's LI to Reinhart Field on Tuesday night.  The Privateers (4-1-0, 1-1-0 Skyline) saw their four-game winning streak snapped with a 7-0 loss to the Golden Eagles (4-2-0, 2-1-0 Skyline).

After Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) made six saves in the first 27 minutes, St. Joseph's LI got on the board when Brooke Esposito converted a penalty kick.  The Golden Eagles then made it 2-0 in the 36th minute when Emma Furey's cross was tapped in by Alyssa Schimmenti.  St. Joseph's LI added four goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half before Gabriela Saravia capped the scoring in the 88th minute.

Maritime's best scoring chance came in the 76th minute.  Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) split two defenders and put a low attempt on net, but St. Joseph's LI goalkeeper Alana Downey made the stop.  Downey was credited with two saves in relief of Kristin Vahle (1-1-0), who played the first half and earned the win.  Etienne (4-1-0), meanwhile, tallied 13 saves, one shy of her career-high.

St. Joseph's LI outshot the Privateers 46-6 in the contest, with six different Golden Eagles finding the back of the net.  Furey finished with two goals and two assists, and Esposito had an assist to go along with her tally.

Up next for Maritime is a 7 p.m. matchup with Sarah Lawrence (4-3-1, 1-0-1 Skyline) at Reinhart Field on Friday.
