SCHENECTADY, NY – The Maritime College football team's first road game of the season came down to the wire on Saturday. After Union took a three-point lead with 3:45 remaining, the Privateers marched to the Union 24 in the final minute. However, the drive stalled and the Garnet Chargers (1-1) held on for an 18-15 win over Maritime (1-1) at Frank Bailey Field.
Union received the opening kickoff and drove 81 yards in six plays for a touchdown. The Garnet Chargers' two-point attempt was successful, giving them an 8-0 lead. Union increased its advantage to 11-0 on Max Gluck's 28-yard field goal with 5:13 left in the first quarter.
It was still 11-0 when
Nick Tulipano (Bronx, NY) recovered a fumble at the Union 40 with 1:07 left until halftime.
Steven Stassi (East Islip, NY) started the Maritime drive with a 4-yard completion to
Devin Cline (Miller Place, NY) before a 19-yard pass to
Luke Caliendo (North Babylon, NY) set the Privateers up at the Union 17. On 2
nd-and-9, Cline rushed for a 16-yard touchdown to get Maritime on the board. The two-point conversion brought the Privateers within 11-8 at the break.
Maritime took advantage of another Union fumble midway through the third quarter.
Dennis Matich (Floral Park, NY) fell on the loose ball, then an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty gave the Privateers another 15 yards to the Union 43. Eight plays later, Stassi connected with Cline for a 10-yard scoring strike, putting Maritime in front 15-11 with 4:35 remaining in the period.
On their next drive, the Privateers moved 57 yards in 12 plays to the Union 12. Caliendo's 29-yard field goal attempt was blocked, however, and the lead stayed at four points, 15-11. Taking over at their own 20, the Garnet Chargers drove the length of the field for the go-ahead score, a 1-yard TD pass from Patch Flanagan to Cam Fries with 3:45 to go.
After a pass to Caliendo gave Maritime a first down at the Union 32, Cline ran for eight yards to set up a 2
nd-and-2 at the Garnet Chargers' 24. Union used its final timeout before an incomplete pass made it 4
th-and-7 with under a minute left. On the fourth down play, Stassi was sacked, giving possession back to Union. The Garnet Chargers then took two knees to seal the victory.
Cline ran 19 times for 83 yards and a touchdown. He also had four receptions for 35 yards and a score.
Ian Derda (Guilford, CT) also had four catches and paced the Privateers with 37 receiving yards. Overall, Stassi was 16-for-30 for 133 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively,
Aidan Griffin (Queens, NY) led the team with nine tackles, while Matich made five solo stops to go along with a fumble recovery.
Vinny Fundaro (Levittown, NY) tallied three sacks, and
Justin Santos (Ossining, NY) was also credited with a sack.
Dylan Denicker (Queens, NY), meanwhile, recorded his first career interception.
For the Garnet Chargers, Flanagan went 13-for-24 passing for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Fiore carried 12 times for 96 yards, and Jonathan Anderson gained 56 yards on 10 rushes. Tommy Leonard led Union with four catches for 40 yards, and Robbie Tolbert had a 21-yard TD reception for the Garnet Chargers' first points of the game. Jordan Black paced Union with nine tackles, while Nate Sullivan and Cole DaSilva each notched five solo stops.
Three of Maritime's next four games are at home, including the next two. The Privateers wrap up their non-conference slate by welcoming Anna Maria (1-1) to Reinhart Field next Saturday at 1 p.m.
