Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) header in the 68
th minute proved to be the difference, as the Maritime College women's soccer team (4-0-0) posted a 1-0 victory over Five Towns (1-2-1) at FTC Field on Friday night. The Privateers' four straight wins to start the season are a program record.
After Ford had one shot hit the crossbar and two others saved in the first half,
Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) saw her 49
th-minute attempt bang off the crossbar. In the 68
th minute, Maritime finally broke through.
Ava Morrill (New Windsor, NY) took a corner kick and sent it into the box, where she found Ford along the far post, and she headed home her sixth goal of the year.
Overall, the Privateers outshot the Sound 19-7, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. However, Five Towns goalkeeper Diamond Pertillar (0-2-1) made nine saves to keep it a 1-0 game. The Sound nearly found an equalizer in the 90
th minute, but Wildrin Hernadez's attempt was blocked and Maritime secured its fourth consecutive victory.
Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) recorded two saves in her second shutout of the season. Ford, meanwhile, has a three-game goal-scoring streak. Morrill's assist was her second this year.
Maritime (1-0-0 Skyline) resumes its Skyline Conference schedule by hosting St. Joseph's LI (3-2-0, 1-1-0 Skyline) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. It will be the start of a span in which the Privateers play four out of five at Reinhart Field.
