THROGGS NECK, NY – On Tuesday night, the Maritime College (3-0-0) women's soccer team defeated Saint Elizabeth (2-1-1) by a 3-1 count at Reinhart Field. This marks the first time in program history that the Privateers have won each of their first three games.
Maritime nearly got on the board in the second minute, when
Richae Gibson (Sanford, FL) sent a blast from midfield that was mishandled by Saint Elizabeth goalkeeper Salma Ibrahim. Ibrahim was able to recover and stop the ball just before it reached the goal line, however. Three minutes later, the Privateers did break through, as
Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) tapped one home into the lower left corner off a beautiful setup from
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY).
In the 23
rd minute, the Privateers doubled their advantage on a goal by
Ava Morrill (New Windsor, NY). She turned around from 40 yards out and booted one towards the net that bounced over Ibrahim's head and across the line for a 2-0 Maritime lead. Ford then made it 3-0 in the 29
th minute. She was fouled in the box and converted the penalty kick for her fifth goal of the year. Goalkeeper
Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) preserved that 3-0 advantage by making three saves in a 12-second span in the 36
th minute.
After Saint Elizabeth was awarded a penalty kick in the 69
th minute, Laila Kendle placed it perfectly into the lower right corner to put the Eagles on the scoreboard.
Jamie Kibler (Throggs Neck, NY) nearly got that goal back in the 78
th minute, but Ibrahim made the save and the game ended as a 3-1 Maritime victory.
With a goal and an assist, Ford now has 12 points in Maritime's last two games. Garcia's goal was her fourth of the year, while Morrill found the back of the net for the first time this season and third time in her career. Etienne (3-0-0) was credited with four saves in the win.
For the Eagles, Kendle's goal on the penalty kick (which was the first tally allowed by the Privateers in 2024) was her team-leading 12
th of the season. Ibrahim (2-1-1), meanwhile, had seven saves in a losing effort. Overall, Maritime outshot Saint Elizabeth 18-12, including a 10-5 edge in shots on goal.
The Privateers are back on the road for their next game. Maritime visits Five Towns (1-1-0) at 6 p.m. on Friday.
