Maritime Erupts for 33 Runs In Doubleheader

NEWBURGH, NY – The Maritime College baseball team's offense kept rolling on Sunday afternoon against Mount St. Mary.  The Privateers combined for 33 runs in the two games to sweep their first road Skyline Conference doubleheader of the season.  After taking game one by a 14-1 count, Maritime (16-5, 6-0 Skyline) used a sixth-run ninth to pull away for a 19-12 victory over the Knights (5-16, 2-6 Skyline) in the nightcap at the Mount St. Mary Baseball/Softball Complex.

In the opener, Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) gave the Privateers a 4-0 lead with a second-inning grand slam.  Maritime added a run when Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) stole home in the third, then put up a three-spot in the fourth.  The Privateers increased their advantage to 12-0 on a pair of two-run singles by Copozzi and Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) in the fifth before picking up two more in the sixth.

That was more than enough offense for Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY), who gave up a single in the second, then retired 15 of the next 16 hitters he faced until issuing a two-out walk in the seventh.  The Knights followed with consecutive singles to get on the board before Santeramo (1-1) induced a ground out to finish off his first win since April 10, 2022.  He struck out four and walked two in the complete game effort.

Forgione reached base in all four of his plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with two walks, a grand slam and three runs scored.  Ventura was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Copozzi went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) and Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) also scored twice.

Adam Leone, Richard Lamping and Ryan Lutinski had Mount St. Mary's three hits, with Lutinski recording the Knights' only RBI.  Starting pitcher Michael Pisseri (0-1) took the loss after yielding five runs (one earned) on one hit and six walks in 2.2 innings.  He recorded four strikeouts.

Maritime quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first in game two.  Martinson made it 5-0 with an RBI single in the second before the Privateers scored five more in the fourth.  Copozzi delivered the big blow in the inning with a two-run homer that extended Maritime's cushion to 10-0.

Mount St. Mary battled all the way back, however, tallying seven runs in the bottom of the fourth before William Reese Kelly delivered a game-tying, three-run double in the sixth.  The Privateers regained the lead when Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) tripled, then scored on an error in the top of the seventh, and Copozzi's two-run triple in the eighth gave Maritime a 13-10 advantage.

After the Knights pulled within 13-12 in the bottom of the eighth, the Privateers responded with a six-spot in the top of the ninth.  Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) singled with the bases loaded and Martinson ripped a two-run double two batters later.  He scored when Copozzi reached on a fielder's choice, while Danny Green (Belle Harbor, NY) stole home for Maritime's 19th run of the game.  Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth before striking out the next three hitters to seal the win.

Madigan ended up a homer short of the cycle, going 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs.  Martinson was also 4-for-6 with three runs scored, and he knocked in four.  Copozzi finished 3-for-6 with a homer, a triple, two runs scored and six RBIs, while Forgione crossed the plate four times.  Leipold, added two hits, including a triple, and scored twice.

Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) got the start on the mound and lasted 3.2 innings.  He surrendered seven runs on seven hits, struck out six and walked two.  Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) gave up three runs on five hits and tallied four strikeouts over four innings, while William Chu (Port Washington, NY) (2-0) earned the win after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings.  He recorded three strikeouts and issued one walk.  After Evan Block (Seaford, NY) allowed two unearned runs in 0.2 innings, Kellner came on for the final 1.1 innings and picked up his fifth save of the year.

For the Knights, Kaleb Morgan was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.  Tyler Crocitto finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs, and Kelly went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.  Elijah Duprey, Justin Stella and Joseph Lembo all drove in two runs for Mount St. Mary.  Starting pitcher Mike Scotto lasted four innings, yielding 10 runs (seven earned) on nine hits and three walks.  John Moreland (1-2) took the loss after allowing three unearned runs and three hits in 3.2 innings.  He walked two and struck out one.

Up next for Maritime is a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Manhattanville (9-11, 4-4 Skyline) on Saturday.  It will be the second of three straight road twinbills for the Privateers.
