Offense Stays Hot In Senior Day Sweep

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Wednesday, the Maritime College baseball team set a program record with 38 runs against Lehman.  On Saturday afternoon, the Privateers combined for 42 in a doubleheader sweep of Purchase.  After earning a crazy, come-from-behind 19-18 win in the opener, Maritime (23-11, 11-5 Skyline) rolled to a 23-5 victory over the Panthers (15-18, 7-7 Skyline) in Game 2 at Reinhart Baseball Field.

Purchase scored four runs in the top of the first in Game 1, but the Privateers immediately countered with a pair of two-run homers by Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) and Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA).  Martinson went deep again leading off the third, and Maritime added three more in the inning to go up 8-4.  The Privateers increased their advantage to 11-4 in the fourth, when Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) delivered a two-run double and Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) followed with an RBI single.

However, the Panthers put up a 12-spot in the top of fifth, as Tyler Della Mura had six RBIs in the inning on a two-run double and a grand slam.  Maritime got one back on Michael Frazzetta's (Howard Beach, NY) pinch-hit RBI double, then regained the lead with five runs in the sixth.  After Purchase tied it on Brandon Gonzalez's home run in the seventh, Patrick Reyes belted his second homer of the game to put the Panthers back in front, 18-17.

In the bottom of the eighth, Martinson sent a game-tying blast to left center.  He became the third Privateer this season to homer three times in a game, joining Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) and Forgione.  After having one three-home run game in program history entering this season, Forgione and Martinson have now done it in back-to-back contests.

Shea was hit by a pitch with two down, and he moved to second on Madigan's single.  After the runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, Forgione was intentionally walked.  That brought up Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY), who drew a walk, allowing the go-ahead run to score.  Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the 19-18 victory.

Martinson finished 4-for-6 with the three long balls, while Madigan was 4-for-7 with two runs scored and five RBIs.  Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, and Shea crossed the plate five times.  Starting pitcher Matt Demme (Carmel, NY) gave up eight runs (six earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks over four innings.  Sorge (2-1) tossed the final three innings and earned the win.  He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two.

For the Panthers, Reyes was 3-for-5 with two homers, three runs scored and six RBIs.  Della Mura also drove in six runs, while Gonzalez had four hits and four runs scored.  Trevor Zanderzuk scored three times for Purchase.  Myles Scarry got the start on the mound and lasted 3.1 innings.  He yielded 11 runs (nine earned) on nine hits, struck out four and walked seven.  Justin Doskoez (5-4) took the loss after surrendering seven runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks while also recording a strikeout over three innings.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead again in Game 2, scoring three times in the top of the first.  However, Maritime again immediately countered, plating five runs in the inning.  Madigan led off with a home run off the right field foul pole, and Forgione followed with an infield single for his 172nd career hit, making him the program's all-time leader.  Forgione later scored on Leipold's two-run homer, and Madigan ended the rally with his second hit of the inning, an RBI single.

After Reyes tied the game with a two-run homer in the top of the third, Maritime erupted for 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Forgione put the Privateers back in front with a two-run double before Bardi smashed a two-run homer to center.  Maritime added four more in the fourth, with Forgione delivering his second two-run double in as many innings, then Pinggera crushed a pinch-hit grand slam that made it 23-5 in the bottom of the fifth.  Madigan came up next needing a triple for the cycle, but he settled for his second double (and fifth hit) of the game.

Prior to the doubleheader, the Privateers honored their 15 graduating seniors.  Maritime got most of them into the second game, including Jimmy Tighe (Mineola, NY), who relieved starting pitcher Brandon Stanley (Trinity, FL) in the sixth and retired the only batter he faced.  Chris Simone (Bayside, NY) then pitched the seventh and tossed a 1-2-3 inning.

Madigan reached base all six times, going 5-for-5 with a walk.  He scored three runs and tallied three RBIs (giving him eight on the day).  With nine hits in the twinbill, Madigan now has 62 on the season, one shy of the single-season program mark.

Forgione, meanwhile, was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBIs.  Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Frazzetta went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.  Leipold ended up 2-for-3 with a homer, three runs scored and two RBIs, while Martinson crossed the plate four times.  Stanley (7-1) gave up five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks over 5.2 innings.

Liam Daly went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Panthers, while Reyes had four RBIs on his two home runs.  Philip Dragovich started on the mound for Purchase and lasted 1.1 innings.  He was charged with five runs and seven hits.  Justin Lorenzo (0-2) took the loss after yielding six runs on five hits while striking out two and issuing two walks over one inning of work.

Maritime concludes the regular season with a pair of road doubleheaders, starting with a 12 p.m. twinbill at Farmingdale (17-10, 10-4 Skyline) on Sunday.
