Privateers Split Doubleheader at Farmingdale

FARMINGDALE, NY – After scoring 80 runs over its previous three games, the Maritime College baseball team opened a doubleheader at Farmingdale on Sunday by engaging in a pitchers' duel.  The Privateers (24-12, 12-6 Skyline) dropped that contest by a 2-1 margin before having another offensive eruption in Game 2, a 17-6 win over the Rams (18-11, 11-5 Skyline) at Farmingdale Baseball Stadium.

In Game 1, Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY) and Tyler Kregeloh both put up zeroes through the first three innings.  Maritime then took the lead in the top of the fourth when Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) homered to left.  With the tying run on second and one out in the top of the fifth, Farmingdale called upon Justin DiMartino to pinch-hit, and he delivered a two-run homer to left that gave the Rams the lead.

The two home runs would prove to be the only scoring in the contest.  Kregeloh (3-0) gave up just three hits while striking out two and walking one over six innings before being relieved by Tyler DiRocco, who recorded his second save of the season.  Santeramo (1-3), meanwhile, tossed a six-inning complete game.  He allowed two runs on five hits while recording four strikeouts and issuing one walk.

Maritime used a six-run second inning to take an early lead in Game 2.  Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) and Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) each had an RBI single during the inning, while Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) knocked in two with a bases-loaded single.  After the Rams got two runs back in the bottom of the second, Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) made it 8-2 with a two-run single in the top of the third.  Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY), who went 1-for-3 in Game 1, followed with a single for his 64th hit of the season, a new program record.

Farmingdale pulled within 8-4 in the bottom of the third before the Privateers put up a four-spot in the fourth.  Shea capped the rally with a two-run double to left center.  Maritime added another run in the fifth, then, after the Rams' Bobby Pollock hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, tallied four more in the eighth.

Madigan drove in three with a bases-loaded double, and Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) doubled him home to make the score 17-6.  William Chu (Port Washington, NY) came on to pitch the bottom of the eighth and retired the Rams in order, bringing the game to an early end.  He had one strikeout in the inning.

Colin McKeon (Mullica Hill, NJ) got the start on the mound and went 1.1 innings.  He allowed two runs on one hit, struck out one and walked two.  Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) followed with 1.1 innings of relief, yielding two runs on two hits.  Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) (1-1) was credited with the win after tossing 4.1 innings and holding the Rams to two runs on four hits while notching one strikeout.

Offensively, the Privateers pounded out 14 hits.  Shea finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, while Martinson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.  Leipold, Frazzetta and Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) each scored three times, and Madigan went 2-for-6 with a run scored and three RBIs.  Over its last six games, Maritime has scored 99 total runs.

For the Rams, Jordan Lambert was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Richie Heyder ended up 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Pollock and Elian Pimentel both crossed the plate twice for Farmingdale.  Starting pitcher Derek Watts (3-3) surrendered six runs on two hits over an inning-plus and took the loss.  He walked three and struck out one.

On Friday, Maritime concludes the regular season with a 10 a.m. doubleheader at Yeshiva (0-22, 0-16 Skyline).  The games will be played in Ridgefield Park, NJ.  One win will guarantee the Privateers no lower than the No. 4 seed in the Skyline Tournament.
