THROGGS NECK, NY – Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) hit a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning of the second game of the Maritime College baseball team's doubleheader against St. Joseph's LI on Sunday afternoon. The Privateers (20-10, 9-5 Skyline) ultimately fell to the Golden Eagles (22-7, 12-0 Skyline) by a 4-3 score in 10 innings, however, giving St. Joseph's LI a sweep of the twinbill. The Golden Eagles took the opener by a 6-1 count.
Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) launched his 15
th home run of season in the bottom of the first, but the Golden Eagles took the lead on Anselmo Joya's two-run shot in the third. St. Joseph's LI then added a run in the third on an RBI double by Rob Page in the fourth. It remained that way until the eighth, when pinch-hitter
Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) drew a two-out walk before Frazzetta went deep to left.
Maritime loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth after
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) and Forgione both walked, then
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) was intentionally issued a free pass.
Harry Leipold (Thornwood, NJ) sent a two-out grounder to short, though, ending the threat and sending the contest into extra innings. The Golden Eagles plated one on Mike DiFilippo's RBI single in the top of the 10
th before retiring the Privateers in order in the bottom half of the inning to close out the 4-3 win.
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) started on the mound for Maritime and went four innings. He surrendered three runs on four hits, struck out four and walked three.
Joe Sorge (Montgomery, NY) and
Colin McKeon (Mullica Hill, NJ) each tossed two shutout innings out of the bullpen, while
William Chu (Port Washington, NY) (3-2) pitched the final two innings and took the loss. He was charged with one run on three hits and recorded one strikeout.
For the Golden Eagles, DiFilippo finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Joya, meanwhile, was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. Starting pitcher Jack Kelly lasted five innings, giving up one run on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Dante Morabito (3-1) earned the win after allowing just two runs and one hit in a five-inning relief appearance. He walked six and struck out four.
In the first game, Maritime immediately struck for a run in the bottom of the first. Madigan singled and Forgione was hit by a pitch before a base hit by
Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) loaded the bases with nobody out. Frazzetta then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that put the Privateers in front, 1-0.
That score held until the top of the sixth, when the Golden Eagles put up a six-spot on a pair of three-run homers by Joya and Joe Hackal. Maritime put two runners on in the bottom half of the inning, but failed to score. The Golden Eagles' Peter Manger then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to finish off the complete game, 6-1 victory.
As a team, the Privateers managed seven hits off Ranger, with Copozzi roping two doubles and Madigan singling twice. He also scored Maritime's only run.
Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY) (1-2) went 5.2 innings on the mound, yielding six runs on nine hits, striking out three and walking one.
Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) didn't allow a hit over the final 1.1 innings. He tallied two strikeouts.
Manger (4-2) recorded three strikeouts and a walk while holding the Privateers to one run on seven hits. Offensively, DiFilippo was 2-for-3 for the Golden Eagles, while John Lynch had two hits, including a double, and scored a run.
After playing five straight at home, the Privateers hit the road for six of their final eight regular season games. Maritime begins the string by visiting Ramapo (21-12) for a non-conference tilt at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
