Privateers Post Fourth Straight Victory

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – After belting a school-record eight home runs against John Jay on Thursday night, the Maritime College baseball team hit zero long balls on Friday.  Instead, the Privateers (6-2) used eight singles and two doubles, as well as another solid start from Matt Demme (Carmel, NY), to notch a 7-3 victory over Baruch (0-6) at Flowers Park.

Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) led off the game with a single before scoring on an error.  Baruch tied it in the bottom of the first, but Madigan put Maritime back in front with an RBI single in the second.  The Privateers then increased their advantage to 4-1 with two runs in the fifth.  Madigan was at the heart of the rally again, drawing a leadoff walk, stealing second, moving to third on a wild pitch, and scoring on the back end of a double steal.  Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) later added an RBI single.

Bardi picked up another RBI with a seventh-inning double, and the Privateers scored two more in the eighth.  Madigan drove in a run on a fielder's choice before Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) lifted a sacrifice fly to center.

Baruch pulled within 7-3 in the bottom of the eighth, then put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the ninth.  However, Maritime closer Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) retired the final two Bearcats to lock down the Privateers' fourth straight victory.

Demme improved to 3-0 after holding Baruch to one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 6.1 innings.  Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) went 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out one.  William Chu (Port Washington, NY) was charged with a hit and a walk over 0.1 innings before Keller pitched the final 0.2 innings to notch his third save of the season.

Four different Privateers had two hits in the game.  Madigan was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Bardi finished 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY) ended up 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

The Bearcats outhit the Privateers 11-10, with Leo DeRisi going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Roy Longarzo and Joseph Cocozza each had two hits and a run scored, while Pedro Tejada, Jr., recorded a double and an RBI.  He also scored a run.  Starting pitcher Jeremy Ramirez (0-2) took the loss after surrendering four runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts in five innings.  Nicholas LaPointe and Ryan Foerst both followed with two innings of relief.

On Saturday, Maritime travels to Centenary (5-7) for a 10 a.m. matchup.  It will be the Privateers' third game in as many days.
