HACKETTSTOWN, NJ – After scoring 28 total runs in victories over John Jay and Baruch on Thursday and Friday, the Maritime College baseball team tallied 12 more on Saturday morning. The Privateers (7-2) extended their winning streak to five straight with a 12-9 triumph over Centenary (5-7) at Our Diamond of Dreams.
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) got Maritime on the board with an RBI double in the top of the second, and
Alex Bardi (Wantagh, NY) added an RBI double of his own in the third. The Privateers then put up a seven-spot in the top of the fourth. Maritime loaded the bases on three straight singles before
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) delivered a double that made it 5-0. Two batters later,
Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY) went deep, increasing the Privateers' lead to 7-0. After Bardi singled,
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) crushed Maritime's second two-run homer of the inning.
Centenary scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, but the Privateers responded with three in the fifth. Martinson roped an RBI double, and he later came across on
Freddy Forgione's (Ronkonkoma, NY) sacrifice fly. Milone followed with an RBI single that extended Maritime's cushion to 12-2.
It was 12-3 in the bottom of the ninth when the Cyclones put together a rally. Centenary plated five two-out runs to pull within 12-8 and prompt Maritime Head Coach
Charlie Barbieri to summon closer
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) out of the bullpen. He gave up an RBI single to the first batter he faced before inducing a fly ball to right that wrapped up the 12-9 victory.
As a team, the Privateers pounded out 16 hits. Madigan finished 4-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs, while Martinson was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Milone went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Bardi contributed two hits.
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) and
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) both had two hits and scored twice.
Brandon Stanley (Trinity, FL) (3-1) tossed eight solid innings on the mound. He was charged with three runs (two earned) on two hits and struck out one while not issuing a walk.
Four different Cyclones recorded two hits, with Jake Keenan going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Nick Payne also had two RBIs, while Joseph Frei scored three times. Louie Vassallo (0-2) started on the mound and took the loss. He yielded seven runs on nine hits and a walk over 3.1 innings. Aidan Pitshone pitched 0.1 innings, and Nick Guiro allowed just one unearned run over five innings of relief.
Up next for the Privateers is the RussMatt Invitational in Central Florida. Maritime begins the event with a doubleheader against Williams (1-0) at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
