FARMINGDALE, NY – On Wednesday night, the Maritime College men's basketball team played its final road game of the season at first-place Farmingdale. In a contest that was postponed a day because of Tuesday's snowstorm, the Rams (22-2, 14-1 Skyline) completed a season sweep of the Privateers (14-10, 9-6 Skyline) with an 82-59 victory at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.
It was a 9-7 game early on before Farmingdale used a 16-0 run to open up a 25-7 advantage. Maritime came battling back, though, scoring 21 of the next 29 points to get back within five, 33-28, with 1:33 left in the first half. The Rams led 38-30 at halftime.
After Farmingdale opened the second half with six straight points, Maritime got back-to-back buckets from
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) to trim its margin to 10 at 44-34. The Rams responded with a 12-2 spurt, though, to increase their cushion to 56-36. Farmingdale's lead reached a game-high 28 points at 78-50 with 4:09 remaining, and the Rams won by an 82-59 count.
Murphy paced the Privateers with 14 points to go along with five rebounds.
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) finished with 11 points and six boards, while
Jovan Germain (Brooklyn, NY) had eight points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) contributed nine points, and
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) secured five boards. Maritime shot 34.8 percent (23-of-66) overall, but was just 4-for-26 (15.4 percent) from three-point range. The Privateers went 9-for-12 (75 percent) at the foul line.
Nick Hurowitz led five Rams in double-figures with 19 points. He also notched eight rebounds and three steals. Corey Powell posted 16 points, six boards and five steals, while Jevon Santos tallied 12 points, five rebounds and six assists. Aaron Davis recorded 11 points and five assists, and Michael Notias poured in 11 points off the bench. Liam Buckley, meanwhile, grabbed six rebounds for Farmingdale, which had a 47-40 edge on the glass. The Rams shot 39.7 percent (29-of-73) from the field, 37.5 percent (12-of-32) from downtown, and 85.7 percent (12-of-14) at the charity stripe.
Maritime concludes the regular season by hosting Yeshiva (13-11, 10-5 Skyline) at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Privateers will honor their two graduating seniors—Begovic and
Jake Cosgrove (Seaford, NY)—prior to the contest.
