Privateers Drop 3-0 Decision to St. Joseph’s LI

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Thursday night, the Maritime College volleyball team returned home for the only time in a seven-match span to take on St. Joseph's LI.  The Privateers (4-12, 1-2 Skyline) suffered their third straight defeat, falling to the Golden Eagles (7-7, 3-0 Skyline) by a 25-14, 25-22, 25-14 count at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

After St. Joseph's LI scored the first two points of the match, Maritime rattled off five of the next six to take a 5-3 lead.  The Golden Eagles responded with a 12-1 spurt, however, to open up a 15-6 advantage.  The Privateers claimed the next three points to pull within 15-9, but would get no closer, as St. Joseph's LI took the set, 25-14.

There were eight ties in the second set.  St. Joseph's LI built a 13-9 cushion before Maritime captured four straight points to level the score at 13-13.  After the Golden Eagles regained a 20-16 advantage, the Privateers again came storming back, forcing a 21-21 deadlock on a Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) service ace.  St. Joseph's LI closed the set on a 3-1 run, though, to earn a 25-22 win and go ahead 2-0 in the match.

The Golden Eagles then began the third set with a 10-1 rally.  Maritime eventually got within seven points at 17-10 before St. Joseph's LI scored the next three points to push its lead back to 10.   With a 25-14 set win, the Golden Eagles secured a 3-0 victory.

Soraya Hall (Valrico, FL) led Maritime with eight kills, and she added 10 digs.  Karelys Rolon (Hudson, FL) finished with six kills and a match-high 18 digs, while Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) notched six kills and eight assists.  Thiel, meanwhile, had 13 assists and nine digs to go along with three service aces.

For St. Joseph's LI, Isabella Juliano tallied nine kills on .533 hitting.  Jackie Wolf and Nina Vanderhoof recorded eight kills apiece, and Katie D'Angelo had a double-double with 24 assists and 15 digs.  She also served four aces.  Sarah Montefuso added 12 digs for the Golden Eagles, who hit a combined .263 (35 kills, nine errors, 99 attempts) as a team.

Maritime travels to Rowan for its final tri-match of the season on Saturday.  The Privateers face DeSales (5-10) at 1 p.m. before a 3 p.m. matchup with the host Profs (7-7).
