BRONX, NY – On Thursday, the Maritime College women's soccer team made the short trip to Lehman. An early goal proved to be the difference, as the Lightning (5-2-0) notched a 1-0 victory over the Privateers (5-5-0) at South Field.
Maritime nearly struck first when
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) and
Sara Williams (Oceanside, NY) both fired shots in the opening minute of the contest. Each attempt was off the mark, however. Lehman then found the back of the net in the sixth minute. Lory Castro connected with Emily Huerta, who snuck one past
Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.
Williams had a chance at an equalizer in the 12
th minute, but Lehman goalkeeper Katelyn Rice made the save to preserve the Lightning's advantage. She recorded three first-half saves before stopping
Madeline Powers (Atlantic Beach, NJ) and
Ava Morrill (New Windsor, NY) in the second half. Overall, Rice (5-2-0) was credited with five saves in the victory.
The Privateers outshot the Lightning 14-6, but were unable to find the back of the net. Etienne (4-5-0) took the loss in her return to the Maritime lineup.
After playing back-to-back non-conference games, Maritime (1-4-0 Skyline) resumes its Skyline slate on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. visit to Manhattanville (3-2-3, 2-1-1 Skyline).
