Privateers Come Up Short Against Mount St. Vincent

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team battled Mount St. Vincent for five sets on Tuesday night.  The Privateers (4-17, 1-5 Skyline) took a 2-1 lead in the match before the Dolphins (4-11, 1-5 Skyline) rallied to post an 18-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 15-13 win at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY), Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) and Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) all had double-doubles for Maritime.  Devaney finished with a career-high 19 kills to go along with 11 digs, while Pavarini tallied 11 kills and 19 assists.  She also registered four blocks and three service aces.  Thiel, meanwhile, recorded 18 assists and 14 digs.  Alexa Nolan (Queens, NY) set a career-high with 12 digs, and Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) contributed 11 digs while adding four aces.  In addition, Elizabeth Phillips (Carthage, NY) notched six blocks.

Maritime hit an outstanding .348 (11 kills, three errors, 23 attempts) as a team in the first set.  The Privateers opened up an early 4-2 lead and extended that advantage to 12-7 on a Pavarini kill.  After back-to-back Pavarini aces made it 19-10, Mount St. Vincent went on an 8-3 run to get within four, 22-18.  However, Maritime claimed the final three points of the set to earn a 25-22 win.

There were 15 ties and eight lead changes in the second set.  The Dolphins built the first three-point cushion for either side at 15-12 before Maritime responded with a 7-2 run to go ahead 19-17.  After a Devaney kill made it 21-20 in favor of the Privateers, Mount St. Vincent rattled off five straight points to take the set, 25-21, and level the match.

After the Privateers raced out a 3-0 advantage in the third set, the Dolphins scored eight of the next 10 points to go up 8-5.  Mount St. Vincent extended the margin to 17-10, but a Devaney kill and three consecutive aces by Thiel brought Maritime within 17-14.  The Dolphins regained a six-point edge at 21-15 before a block by Pavarini and Phillips ignited a set-ending 10-0 run for the Privateers.  A Cordero ace closed out the 25-21 set win that gave Maritime a 2-1 lead in the match.

Mount St. Vincent took control of the fourth set early on.  The Dolphins captured the first three points and eventually increased their lead to 13-3.  The Privateers used a 5-1 run to trim its deficit to 14-8, but Mount St. Vincent immediately responded, pushing the margin back to nine at 18-9.  Maritime again battled back, getting within 19-14 on a Devaney ace.  Mount St. Vincent ended the set on a 6-1 rally, though, to notch a 25-15 win and send the match to a decisive frame.

In the final set, Maritime took a 4-3 lead on a kill by Devaney before the Dolphins rattled off four points in a row to go in front 7-4.  After a Devaney kill brought the Privateers back within one at 11-10, Mount St. Vincent went on a 3-1 run to reach match point.  Maritime fought off two match point opportunities, but the Dolphins converted on their third, capturing the set by a 15-13 count to seal the 3-2 victory.

For the Dolphins, Melanieann Broderick led the way with 12 kills, and she added 10 digs.  Reilly Nichtern also had a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs, while Lydia Aryee finished with 23 assists and 10 digs.  JaKaia Lotz smashed 11 kills, and Paige Staley handed out 11 assists.  As a team, Mount St. Vincent outdug Maritime 68-56.

Up next for the Privateers is a 7 p.m. contest against Sarah Lawrence (11-5, 5-1 Skyline) on Thursday.  It will mark the end of Maritime's three-match homestand.
